Any Walter Fans Out There???!!!

I'm fascinated by the character of Walter, only because he seems so antithetical to the cardboard cutout "boyfriend/husband who needs to get dumped so the heroine can end up with the hero."

He seemed like a truly decent person who sincerely loved her for her. Unlike the Hanks character who loved her for an ideal he created in his mind of who this person must be.

I was also riveted by the scene where she breaks up with him. Not at all what I had expected.

Anyone have any thoughts/analyses on Walter?

Anyone who would've picked Walter?

I just like Walter because he drove a Saab 9000. Anyone who drives a Saab is OK in my book.

I agree, he was a genuinely good guy, and he really loved Annie. But as the movie progressed you could see that they really weren't right for each other. I think he even realized it. And the gentle, understanding way he let her go was pure class.

A heart can be broken, but it still keeps a-beatin' just the same.

walter was a loser.... sam was way cool compared.

and if annie was wondering about walter BEFORE, then she would have moaned mroe afterward. it was way more than cold feet.

I'd pick walter anyday, but thats because I'm bias. I prefer Bill Pullman than Tom Hanks ;)

I hate how they portrayed him as being unattractive and/or weak because he had allergies! I have pretty brutal seasonal allergies and some food allergies and you can't help it, doesn't mean you're less than someone who has the genetic luxury of not having to deal with those things.

Totally. Not sure if I would have chosen him over Sam - I think I would not have chosen either -- but indeed, Annie's relationship with Walter is the weakest point of the film. Meg Ryan was pretty likable to me throughout the movie EXCEPT in how she related to Walter - how she was stringing him along, and then dumped him, and then he just smiled and agreed... At that moment Walter was the hero, not Meg and not Tom Hanks. This could have been mitigated if Nora Ephron 1) chose other, intentional behavior flaws for Walter (like if he was portrayed as controlling, or whiny, or whatever - but not allergic, which is something that is not his fault!) or 2) gave some kind of reward / closure for Walter by hooking him up with another supporting female character (like, if Annie's friend Becky was played by an actress slightly more attractive than Rosie O'Donnell... and had a secret crush on Walter... and they got together when Annie dumped her... would it not have been NICER...?) I learned from this mistake of the script and provided a "reward" for the discarded men in my romantic comedy https://www.facebook.com/inadream.short. My heroine actually hooks up the guy who is not for her, with the woman of his dreams!!! And I think that even though this is just an ancillary plot point, it makes the emotional impact of the script all the better.

That's part of my problem with suspending reality and enjoying this movie. I simply adore Bill Pullman and can't imagine choosing Hanks over him. That and the thought that she'll just tire of Hanks in a few years and want someone else.

I always like Walter (allergies be damned) He was upbeat and quirky and had that silly sense of humor (which I like!) I was totally charmed when he started singing "Dim Sum, Dim Sum" and I sing it to this day, whenever I see or hear the words Dim Sum.

I think Annie was just attracted to the idea of mothering Jonah and the love that Sam had for his wife. She wanted that "magic" transferred to her, and was will to drop a great guy like Walter, instead of create the "magic"

(AND I think Walter was wonderfully romantic when he suggested they spend Valentine's Day together in New York. So maybe she just wasn't feeling the right kind of chemistry)
