Which is better, Secret Garden or A Little Princess?

Personally, I think A Little Princess.

I think both "The Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess" are both good, I just like "The Secret Garden" better because of its gritty reality. While "A Little Princess" made everything look sweet and have the characters be sweet, funny, or cruel, "The Secret Garden" portrayed everything realistically in terms of the characters and the look of the film. Sara was too much of the all-around sweet girl; she never changed at all in the film. Mary is more interesting because of how her angry, spoiled nature turns to courageous and loving. "A Little Princess" relied too much on melodramatic emotions and on an action scene at the end that didn't feel like it belonged in the film. "The Secret Garden" focused more on the bleak mood and the character development that it felt believable and haunting in a beautiful way.

As far as the film adaptations go, I say The Secret Garden, hands down.

The acting, script, soundtrack and just the film as a whole is just superb.
Part of my love for The Secret Garden stems from my love for the character Mary.
In both the film and book, I admire her independence and determination.
As a girl who grew up without a loving father, I cannot relate to Sara's character in the films, though I appreciate her character in the book.

While we're on the topic, is there anyone else who enjoyed the Shirley Temple version of The Little Princess during their childhood? I remember watching it on PBS and loved it. That's what prompted me to read the book when I was 7. A Little Princess is actually my favorite out of the writings by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Of the books, I much preferred The Secret Garden, with the films A Little Princess wins - whenever I watch it, the music makes me cry.

Definitely, A Little Princess. It literally made me cry like ten times. I like TSG and I love the score though. The Secret Garden wasn't as emotional as I thought it would be.

Haven't seen A Little Princess in ages, but I remember liking SG more than it.
