Favourite Scene and Why?

What is your favourite scene in the movie Rudy? Why? Tell me about how it made you feel, react, and just overall comments about the scene: its aesthetics, lighting, etc. Thanks!

reply

Not a scene, but the whole Goldsmith score makes the movie.

...
"You are an All-American and our Captain, act like it!"
- "I believe I am"

...
and the awesome lecture by Fortune:

"Oh you are so full of crap. You're five foot nothin', a hundred and nothin' and hardly have a spec of athletic ability and you hung in with the best college football team in the land for two years, and you were also going to walk out of here with a degree from the University of Norte Dame. In this life time you don't have to prove nothing to nobody except yourself, and after what you gone through if you haven't done that by now, it aint gonna never happen. Now go on back."

Yeah, the scene where he finally gets accepted to Notre Dame is probably the best. Makes me cry like a little girl.

A distant second is the one where he goes up to the girl on campus whom he was hitting on (for D-Bob?) and asks her, "Don't I know you?" while he's practicing with the team.

Third would be the sack, or maybe that would be second.

Favorite scene:

The sack. It is the climax of the movie. I get teary-eyed when he breaks through the line and starts chasing down the QB.

It all built up slowly. He just wanted to run out of the tunnel with the team for one game. Then he gets put in for one play to officially be part of the game. He ends up playing two plays and records a sack in a meaningless game. To him, that was the pinnacle. Some people in real life take little things like that for granted. That's what made this movie great.

All that work for one measly play. To be a somewhat insignificant statistic in college football annals, well that meant something to Rudy.

Least favorite scene:

The chanting crowd. Overdone and loaded with Hollywood saccharin. I would have bought it more had it been just the team and a few fans chanting.

reply

Oh wait, tied for least favorite scene:

More Hollywood saccharin when they have Rudy recite the coach's speech TWICE in the movie. I didn't like it once, but I can't complain too much because I still love the movie.

Every single scene is a masterpiece and my "favorite" scene.

But one that I don't believe that was mentioned but is AWESOME is when Pete gives Rudy the Notre Dame jacket and then when Rudy puts it on, Pete says "You were born to wear that jacket." I can't tell you how many times I've used that line on my kids when they put on a uniform or something like that before a big event.

Another incredible scene is when Fortune gives Rudy the "five foot nothin', 100 and nothin' and hardly a speck of athletic ability" speech. Actually any scene with Charles S. Dutton in it is an all-time great cinematic treasure.

Finally, how about when Parsegan says "Rudy, I never thought I'd be saying this, but it's been a pleasure."

Finally part 2 - when Rudy's dad shakes the real Rudy in the stands to illustrate the sack - legendary - the real Rudy's smile in that moment is just fantastic.

Finally part 3 - when the young Rudy does his Knute Rockne impression with the record and young Pete stares on in amazement.

When the O'Hare jogs over to Rudy after throwing the TD. Pokes him in the chest, "that was for you."

During a practice session. The one OL goes soft on a block on Rudy and one of the coaches looses it and grabs the OL by the facemask and says something like, "YOU AINT HERE TO BE NO NANNY! and Rudy says, "come on! hit me man!" hahahah I always laugh at that.

Rudy quitting and getting the pep talk from the janitor then walking across the field and players notice and start clapping. Devine's watching from above and says something like, "what the hells goin on down there lets get back to practice!" haha.

“Don’t I know you?”

Rudy, in uniform and on the field with his teammates, saying a casual hello to the girl who once wouldn’t let him help paint the team helmets because he wasn’t even a ND student at the time. Brilliant moment.

All of those the scenes already mentioned are among my favorites, but I’ll always remember the scene where I first realized this movie was a new fav of mine.

When the team captain, Roland(?), pulls Rudy aside before they run out of the tunnel:

Roland: You ready for this champ?
Rudy: I’ve been ready for this my whole life.
Roland: Then you lead us out onto the field.

Hell yeah. Can you imagine dreaming something your entire life and then one day it actually occurs, all because of your work ethic? No luck. Just effort. Okay maybe a little luck. But all against the odds nonetheless.

Then Rudy, who’s totally caught in the moment, looks over, and who does he see? Fortune, who knew exactly where Rudy would be before running out of the tunnel. The look that they exchange says 1,000 words. Rudy was living that moment for Fortune as well as for himself. And Fortune was very proud.

Great scene and I’m getting choked up as I write.

I only saw this once, when it first was in theatres, and I thought most of the movie was pretty much Hollywood fantasy heart-tugging schmaltz, but the scene I remember feeling so bad about, was when he came home and his girl was seeing another guy because she wasn't going to wait for him to do the whole ND thing. I remember I was like, man, that sucks!

Not another guy, Rudy's BROTHER.

Let's face it, what brother would date his brother's ex, particularly when they were together long enough to be looking at houses.

And, he wouldn't have at least asked/told Rudy he was dating her? And the family would be OK with this?

Of course, in real life, that never happened to Rudy. That's why that scene is so weird to me.

reply

It was an odd addition to the story, but I guess chilldoggg's reaction is what they were going for.

reply

To be fair, the total ramifications of the brother/girlfriend/brother dynamic didn't even hit me until I saw the film for, oh, maybe the HUNDREDTH time I saw it! LOL.

That scene certainly did have an emotional thump for sure, even if a bit odd.
