if Made Today....

There is no question that this movie was done extremely well and Tom Hanks played his part brilliantly.
But if this was done today in the present climate, would the production catch hell for not hiring a gay actor to portray the main character?

reply

Perhaps. But if it were made today, it wouldn't be noticed as much as it was back then.

Today this film would be ripped to pieces by ‘progressives’. Filmmakers and actors trying to send a liberal message get bullied worse than anyone, because they allow themselves to be shamed by social justice warriors.

In fact, Demme made this film because he took flak from trans activists for having a sort-of-trans serial killer in Silence Of The Lambs, and I believe he did get some condemnation from gay activists for Philadelphia.

The lesson? Never listen to those who make a career of victimhood.

if it was made today in 2023, Hanks's character as an attorney would have been able to afford prescriptions to prevent contracting HIV in the first place.

The movie was made in 1994 when this did not exist and/or was unknown. if you got HIV you still died of AIDS. That was it. We don't have that anymore for at least the wealthy with insurance because technology has changed.

Now we have a gap in access to the technology, which has not been corrected. This is a privilege based on income.

Hanks has said he wouldn’t play a gay character now because he’s not gay. Identity politics is being pushed in movies, TV, the news media, social media, advertising, universities etc etc causing racism, which was on life support, to come back swinging.

Society has regressed massively since 1993 thanks to Woke.
