Tom Hanks not convincing as a gay man at all

I didn't expect him to act like a complete fairy but he still gives a straight vibe in this movie. It didn't help that he obviously had it in his contract that he didn't have to kiss another man on the lips. Surprised he won the Oscar with that lack of commitment for authenticity.

Maybe he should be 'canceled' for appropriating the role?

reply

If it was made today, for sure that would happen.
People don't have other things to worry about than to cancel random things.

This "culture appropriation" is basically people being upset that someone else just discovered a band that they've already known since their first album.

Ostentatiously gay men would have had trouble climbing the corporate latter in the early 1980's. They had to play it straight.

True that ... my college roommate was in a large law firm and actually got embarrassed by how his gay senior partner would act at private gays-only parties.

The normally straight-acting older lawyer would turn into a total "absolutely fabulous" caricature of a gay man.

Personally, I thought it was a reflection of how oppressed the guy had been. My roommate was able to be "out" and date other guys from the outset of his legal career, so he'd never experienced a need to "hide his true self."

reply

Agreed. Nathan Lane with his 'Birdcage' character would have been much more appropriate.

reply

Funny. It's not convincing when you can't even imagine Hanks' and Banderas' characters making out. The thought is just awkward af.

FOR YOU...I LOVE THAT THOUGHT.🍆

I've personally met many real life gay couples neither of whom were feminine

Makes sense, too. One would think a gay man would be attracted to "manliness"

In reality, there's a wide spectrum of behavior and attraction, but two "manly men" together seems about as "gay" as gay gets to me

reply

Ironic. Matt Bomer didn't portray a gay man very well on Will and Grace. It was a caricature.
And he is gay in real life.

I don’t think the film would have ‘connected’ if Hanks was mincing down the street with Banderas screaming bitchy insults at Jason Robards.

His type does exist. I just thought Antonio would be out of his league.
