sharewell for one thing in the beginning she wasn't whispering she was talking normal...later on it does seem she's whispering, but then again she's scared for her life and very easily could be worried that someone is listening in to what she's saying.

I think it should drive you insane not knowing how it ended! I agree with blossom114.
shareI really liked the plot in this film, but i must say Julia Roberts's constant whispering is also driving me insane! and yeah i can that there may be some relevance to her constant whispering, But!! i can't get over it, it's like someone scratching their nails over a blackboard (well it's driving me crazy in that kind of way).
I am over 75 years old, and do not have a hearing aid nor any other audio assistance. I had no trouble hearing and understanding everything Julia said (even the whispering) under normal viewing conditions. Perhaps if you stood somewhere other than directly in front of the speakers at rock concerts, you might have some of your hearing left.
sharebwaaa hahahahaha!
shareYou kids and your rock n' roll music!!!!!!
shareI think the purpose of her constant whispering is to show how "beaten" down she is. At the beginning, in her law class, it shows she has opinions and isn't afraid to voice them. I guess, if my boyfriend was killed in front of me and there are people chasing me, I'd feel the same way. It's like she is defeated~the only hope she has is Denzel Washington's character. I have noticed that Julia Roberts does this "whispering-thing" in some of her other films; maybe, it's like her "signature" move. Like Walter Matthau would do that stupid singing thing or Sandra Bullock with her laugh. Who knows~I guess that's what they call acting!
sharehmmm and I always thought Nicole Kidman did the whispering thing in all her movies, and Julia did the big laugh and smile thing. I agree quirks like that do annoy me if they are all through a film
"zing zing zing went my heartstrings, from the moment I saw him I fell"
I did not notice her whispering.
shareI definitely noticed her whispering and it bugs me, too. I think it's an acting choice. A BAD acting choice. Don't get me started on her "acting" when Callahan's car gets blown up. I still like the movie but Julia Roberts is a star, not an actor. Except for Erin Brockovich. The one movie she actually "acted" in, she won an Oscar for!
shareNext time use subtitles. Most TV's and this DVD have the option. It's not that hard.

I'm watching it right now on TBS and she's totally whispering. But the guy she was holding hands w/ in the plaza just got shot, so I'm sure she's skeered for her life. I did just hafta turn it up to hear what she's saying, though!

and she keept calling it 'the bwwweeeef.'
His name...was Julio Iglesias!

I've noticed that myself
shareI can understand why Darby Shaw is whispering - after all she doesn't know who's listening in to each and every conversation she has after the brief is known.
And anyway I bet you there's loads of men who would love to have Julia Roberts whispering in their ear!
Its common amongst bad actors and I think Roberts is very overrated and a rather poor actress, actors who find it hard to convince with their dialogue say it more in a whisper and it sounds better, real actors dont need to...de niro, hackman, pacino, they can just speak plainly, Brad Pitt is another idiot who does all the over the top whispering, face touching, so called subtle stuff which does looks phoney. Only actor who is good at the whispering game is Clint Eastwood, now there is a guy who can entertain with a lowered voice!
shareI agree, paulgray. She affects the whispering in order to appear talanted. Hell, she has the talent of a clutch plate. She gets cast for her looks, period. That, and the whole plot sucks to begin with.
