Why do so many here resent Stu for calling Daniel a "loser"?"

I've seen many here saying that while Stu was an otherwise great guy, he crossed the line for calling Daniel a loser.

First of all, how was he wrong?

Secondly, of all the things you can say to someone you may not like, and have likely only heard bad things about from his ex wife, passively calling someone a loser in a "Meh, whatever" type of way is letting the guy off pretty easy. There are so many worse things he could have called him.

I think, at the time of release, people just loved Robin Williams too much to see Daniel for what he was, which was a major loser, Miranda was right to leave him and lucky to find someone as decent as Stu who was a responsible adult who was happy to take on someone else's kids. Calling him a loser was the least of what he could've called him, dude cross-dressed and invaded his family's home to make money off his ex for doing the job he should've been doing for free for years, hence the divorce in the first place.

Makes sense. When I saw this movie as a kid I only saw Daniel as heroic (but I still liked Stu). As an adult, I see Daniel much more as the anti-hero he is.

personally, i have loathed Daniel since 1994 for making the absurdly unfunny "drive by fruiting" prank/joke

lol neglecting his fatherly duties is okay but fruiting is his biggest crime?

I don't even see him as an anti-hero because he's not a hero to me. He's a neglectful parent who, we're expected to believe, grew up out of necessity and love for his kids, but in reality was entitled and couldn't accept a well deserved no so he displayed an insane amount of boundary-crossing and illegal shenanigans to try and reverse the no he got. Him being a hero would've been him stepping aside and getting his shit together and letting his wife be happy, it was still all about him and his happiness in the end. If he'd not seen his kids, they would've been better off.

Good question. Daniel was a loser. Miranda and most women would have left him at some point. The good thing is he grew up after losing his kids.
