People who whine about Stu calling Daniel a loser

Are such pathetic, stupid babies. I've seen people on threads debating if Stu was a good guy say, "He was until he called Daniel a loser. That was mean!!!". Grow the hell up. Yeah he didn't know Daniel, but what he did know about Daniel wasn't good. He probably knew Daniel couldn't hold a job and was constantly unemployed, lived in a sh-thole apartment, and was a man child. Boo freaking hoo, he told his friend Daniel was a loser. Get over it, babies.

reply

Wow! You're a real jerk.

Of course berating people you don't know and calling them 'losers' for circumstances they can't control is the behaviour of a jerk.

You're the 'baby' if you think that's reasonable behaviour.

reply

What circumstances could Daniel not control?

reply

Daniel was indeed a loser. Just because we see the story from Daniel's side and make us root for him doesn't change the facts.

It wasn't until Daniel lost everything that he made a decision to improve his life. If he had made the same improvements before Miranda realized she fell out of love with him, he would never have lost her.

Stu was right.

reply

Stu was pushing 40 and was single, never married, and known for not liking kids. Miranda probably only liked him b/c he was attractive. The kids probably didn't really like him either, since they still loved and missed their dad.

Who's the loser again?!?!?!?!?!?

reply

Daniel all the way.

reply

Who's the loser again?!?!?!?!?!?

Daniel.

I thought I was very clear, but I'll sum it up again.

Daniel was married to a very attractive woman who is a good mother and a hard worker, and threw it all away by acting like a teenager while in his 40s. Daniel couldn't keep a job, keep a house clean, or keep a good woman from falling out of love with him.

Loser.

Stu was successful and good looking. Most importantly, *he* recognized the qualities in Miranda that Daniel apparently didn't see or forgot. Stu, despite having no kids of his own, realized that Miranda's children were important to her. Being good looking and very successful, he could have had his pick over quite a few women who wouldn't be carrying the baggage of three young kids plus an oddball ex husband.

Winner.

reply

Miranda was definately not a "good woman" to me.
She had no good reason to refuse Daniel to see the kids more, so it makes her come across as very bitchy.
Her punishing her son by not giving him a birthday party because of a bad report card was too extreme as well.
And as for Stu, it is wrong to call someone you don't even know "a loser" based on what his ex-wife told you.
You have to take most of the criticism that comes from a disgruntled ex with a big grain of salt.
Daniel also did have a job until he quit acting in a cartoon, that seemed to encourage kids to smoke.

I agree she went overboard with the custody thing, but she had every right to be totally pissed about what Daniel did to her, and the overreaction was likely from his stalking. As for Miranda not being a "good" woman, I don't know how you'd define one. She worked like a dog paying for that gorgeous home, keeping it spotlessly clean, was a great mother to her kids, and was faithful to her husband who was a person who couldn't keep a job, couldn't keep the house clean, and caused her more work after she came home from working a full time job. Checks all the boxes for me.

And as for Stu, it is wrong to call someone you don't even know "a loser" based on what his ex-wife told you.

That's true, but it doesn't change the fact that Stu was right. Daniel was a loser. He reclaimed himself by the end of the movie but that doesn't change the facts. He didn't improve himself until after he lost his wife and his kids in a custody hearing. Up until that point, he was a classic loser.

reply

When exactly did he stalk her?
Geesh...
And I pretty much disagree with everything, that you said about Miranda and Daniel.
Basically, you are too easy on her and too hard on him.

reply

When exactly did he stalk her?

When he sabotaged Miranda's advertisement for domestic help, when he disguised himself as a stranger, when he inserted himself in her household in disguise, and when he and Miranda discussed private "women" subjects when Miranda thought she was talking to another woman. Doesn't get more clear cut than that. In the real world, Daniel would have been arrested and done time if Miranda called the police.

reply

1. She went overboard for sure. She could have been more understanding that her kids needed to see their dad, and made an arrangement. But Daniel's own kids point out he wasn't trying hard. Their first day together, he says some nasty things about her and his apartment is disgusting. Put some effort in.

Oh for God's sake. A birthday party is a privilege, not a right. You have no idea what was bad about his report card. It could have said he was fooling around and not trying. Would you really reward that? Its one thing if someone is genuinely giving their best effort. In all likelihood, he wasn't. She also brought home multiple presents and cake. They were still going to celebrate it. Just not a big party. And Daniel didn't just decide to have a couple friends over. He had God damn farm animals. The police were called. Neighbors were mad. The house was a mess. Daniel didn't have to have some ridiculous blowout party.

Oh boo freaking hoo. Stu told his friend, someone who didn't know Daniel at all, or the kids, that Daniel was a loser. So what? He didn't know Daniel was a massive creep and disguised as an old woman. How about you criticize Daniel for vandalizing Stu's car, constantly mocking Stu TO HIS FACE, and almost killing him?

Daniel had a history of losing jobs. If this was the only one he lost, okay. But he lost them constantly. And he probably made excuses for every one.

You give Daniel literally a pass on everything. The point of the movie is BOTH Miranda and Daniel were flawed.

reply

Wow...
Let me just say that I think I disagree with you on every point.
You are the one, who is clearly giving Miranda a pass on every single thing.
It seems to me that you don't find her flawed at all, despite what you say that the point of the movie is.
But I can relate to excentric people, who don't see success and conduct as the most important things in life.
And thus, I have to side with Daniel over judgemental killjoys like Miranda and Stu.
Especially as everybody can see that she was the sole winner of the whole divorce settlement.

reply

I absolutely think she was flawed. She took things too seriously. She spent too much time at work after the divorce, when the kids needed her the most. Not getting home until after 7 and sticking them with a housekeeper was wrong. I also said she went overboard with the custody. She should have made her own agreement with Daniel. Get his place situated, clean, and livable, within say a week, and she'll let him have the kids until she gets home from work. I also think it was weird she started dating so soon after the divorce. Or at least introducing Stu to her kids was weird. That would be a strange situation to have immediately after their parents split.

Want to try again? :)

Also, im genuinely curious, how do you criticize Stu for calling Daniel a loser to a friend, but you're okay with Daniel repeatedly mocking Stu to his face? And to Miranda? And to the kids? And vandalizing his car? And purposely slipping him something he's allergic to? You said you disagree with me about everything, so I'd love to hear your defense of Daniel for those actions.

reply

Stu nailed it.

reply

I always liked Stu, but I’m also a big 007 fan.

Stu was just a typical guy, no big deal.

reply

He shouldn't have been badmouthing the kids father but he did have a point.
