In the end they were flying away from the island in a helicopter ns thee wre large flying animals nearby.

Where they large birds, or possibly flying reptiles?

Watching it today I thought I saw wing feathers, and this was probably before featherend flying reptiles or feathered dnosaurs were known.

That was a flock of large marine birds called pelicans.

They were just some pelicans.

He made a big deal about dinosaurs being birds at the beginning of the movie. I guess he was just reflecting on seeing them for real at the park as he was being choppered out, and the joy of watching them in flight.
