I agree with all who think this film in pure fiction or rascist.

I hated this film as with Asians I agree that this is just a film about Asian stereotypes very racists as well. Watch Ang Lee's films which talk about or show Chinese etc in a very realistic way unlike Amy Tan or whatever her name who just see's the world thru Caucasian eyes, she seems to spout every stereotype there is in every book she writes she seems very anti Asian imo and again I am 100% Caucasian or German Caucasian who is married to a Japanese American or as I see him, just an American..

This Amy person is just another Lucy Liu or any other man or woman who is ashamed of their culture very sad. Anyway for me and like a lot of others this film is a bunch of Lügen und Scheiße 😊 aka full of lies and so unrealistic heck all of the "Asian" actors were American 😒

Its why Ang Lee's film are the ones to watch like Eat Drink Man Woman, Pushing Hands and The Wedding Banquet and others films from other writers and directors who put Chinese etc in a realistic lite other than Amy Tans whitewashed yank world of racism and stereotypes.

I never revisit posts. Too busy and mature to argue.

Ang Lee, for the most part, makes films about modern Chinese people. Amy Tan's novels are more historical.... The Joy Luck Club is about people who grew up in a time where Asian women were treated very badly in society. Just because it may not be an acceptable truth for 21st century feminist ears doesn't mean it shouldn't be portrayed.

A little stereotype indeed
but racist? that s not true

writing from Beijing as a Chinese guy

reply

Stereotypes? Racist? I actually had much more respect and admiration for Japanese ladies after watching this movie. Went to kimono for dinner with the family afterwards, and left Moon-Pi an extra $3 tip.

What's with all the mentions of Japanese people in a thread on a message board devoted to The Joy Luck Club?

reply

Pretty sure they were... um... y'know... kidding.

issa joke

I wondered the same thing.

I think it is because Amy Tan has that sort of Chinese-American self-consciousness / chip on shoulder thing going on. She does a nice job celebrating Chinese-American women -- a much needed validation for some. But her path towards that involves putting down others (including Chinese men).

You missed the point of the film. It is a love letter to America and a slap at the phallocratic authoritarian culture of China.

All these 60 year old women had horrible lives in China due primarily to male chauvinism and backwards thinking. They start new lives in the USA where they live the American dream and raise American children.

These daughters, now around 30 are 100% American not cultural hybrids.
They call their parents mommy and daddy and have some of the same spoiled attitudes that American kids have.

Much of the film is about the conflicts between the culture their mothers came from and the one they live in.

I thought the show had some depth there even if the stories are very far fetched. Some of that Chinese chauvinism comes through in Lena's husband.

A complaint about the film among Asian men is that the white husbands seem to be much more flexible and understanding.
