really bad movie

i'm really stunned this is getting a "critical reevaluation". it's poorly written and directed, lame jokes, a new glaring plot hole every 5 minutes, odd tonal shifts, the kids are insanely stupid (lets read from a glowing book after we've 'defeated' the witches!) and the movie feels very made-for-tv. no wonder this bombed in theaters. it's a bad disney channel original movie that somehow found its way onto the silver screen. Millenials only worship this movie because they grew up with it on disney channel. it's very shitty. the only thing i liked were the 3 witches and their improv.

there are a couple dozen halloween-themed spooky kids movies that should be seen first, like monster house, coraline, the Addams family, frankenweenie, monster squad, and even lesser ones like scooby doo on zombie island and the haunted mansion are legitimately much better than this.

Nah, it's entertaining and fun.

Perhaps you should limit your movie watching to Shakespeare.

Truly this film could never be appreciated by an admirer of the arts.

That is absolutely true - which is kind of sad when you think about it.

I've never seen Hocus Pocus, but IRONICALLY, sONOMArEturns, you've made me want to watch it now.

reply

it's fairly entertaining in how stupid it is, but most of its badness comes from the fact that it looks and feels like a lame made-for-tv movie from the early 90s

reply

Yea I never took much interest in this film, although some things like the title are neat.
Corpse Bride is another I'd recommend above this.

I'm just still,in shockmand having trauma.

I've read the argument that Hocus Pocus is a really schizophrenic movie, which is probably a big reason why critics didn't know what to make of it, especially at the time:

Like it it wants to be an edgy, 1980s kids' horror movie (a la The Witches), with child-killing Satanists, a teen sex comedy (i.e. the running jokes about Max being a virgin), and a campy musical all in one.

I LIKE HOCUS POCUS...IT'S A FUN LITTLE HALLOWEEN FLICK....BUT I WAS THE RIGHT AGE FOR IT WHEN IT WAS FRESH SO MY NOSTALGIA LEVEL IS HIGH.
