Is there a reason why the opening credits say "Special appearance by Sam Elliott" as if his role is a brief cameo?

I never understood this. Most of the time, when the "special appearance" credit is used it is pointing to a big name actor having a brief cameo, yet Sam Elliott/Buford is pretty much the central character of the first third of the film.

Any reasons for this?

It should have said Sam Elliott and his awesome mustache.

that does not mean "brief"

I think it's because this was originally supposed to be a Miniseries and also be longer. But they decided after they started filming it to put it in theaters. It was reduced I think. Because the movie as we know it would be divided into episodes as a mini series, the credits would say Sam Elliot's role was a special appearance. I guess they just kept it that way when they decided to release it in theaters.
