Anyone find his accent amusing?

i didnt bother me but i did laugh at it a few times

reply

It was slightly camp at times, especially at the end with his final monologue.

reply

Well, just like Al Pacino mastered the Cuban accent for Tony Montana in Scarface, he does it again by mastering the Nuyorican accent for Carlito Brigante in Carlito's Way.

reply

It was not any type of Spanish. It was just badly spelled Spanish, that's all.

reply

Pacino's performance didn't have any ghetto in it.
Every actor in the movie playing a P.R. had it down except Pacino.

reply

Yes! His accent was terrible in this film. He did a decent job in Scarface, but here he often sounds like he just came straight out of the south lmao!

reply

I think he did this movie right after Scent of a woman, no? So I can see how his southern accent was still around.

reply

Agreed, just sounded plain bad, I've had several Puerto Rican friends, never sounded like that. Surprised, since he did the Cuban accent so well in Scarface. He shoulda just played an Italian.

reply

He was speaking African-American slang of that era, which cracked me up because I'm AA and I've heard black folks talk exactly the way he talked in the film. So his style of speaking was very authentic, which is why I liked it. In fact, if you watch the extras, the author of the book on which Carlito's Way is based, said that since the Puerto Rican and African-American communities in New York lived practically side by side and interacted with each other on a daily basis, they would pick up each other's lingo and culture all the time, so it came naturally.

reply

See yeah at the end in his dying words it sounded like a black guy straight up.

reply

I never heard of anyone hispanic with the last name "Brigante", is there even such a name?

Y'know, I could eat a peach for hours

reply

It means "bandit" in Italian.

I thought Pacino's accent was sort of African-American crossed with Cajun.

reply

Good observation.

He was meant to be puerto rican.
