Mask of the Phantasm vs Under the Red Hood
The fan cult classic, vs the more modern fan favorite of the Batman animated films. Which did you think was superior? State your film and why you picked it.

shareI liked Mask of the Phantasm better. Its storyline seemed tauter, and the chemistry between the leads was more palpable. I thought Under the Red Hood was a good movie, but I just find Mask of the Phantasm to be a bit more refined.
Ceterum autem censeo, Carthaginem esse delendam.
Both are great but Mask of the Phantasm has a stronger emotional story and a better Joker.

Mask of the Phantasm by a field. The story was much more "mature" than the gore-fest that Under the Red Hood presented itself, Batman's characterisation was more round, the dialogue was tighter and most important of all: it embraced Batman's nature as a detective from the noir world. It's also comes from an emotionally colder place than the aggressively driven Under the Red Hood. And of course, the animation is much more better.
Among the two, Mask of the Phantasm is a much more ambitious work.

Under The Red Hood wins by an inch. I felt it was more emotional and tragic.
Edit: Also, they never explained how the Phantasm costume works, and it bothered me more than the magic in UTRH.
Although I like "Under the Red Hood", I'd say "Mask of the Phantasm" by far. Everything, from the visual design to the characters and the emotional impact was just so beautifully done.
Also, although "red hood" had good voice-acting, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill pretty much ARE Batman and the Joker in "Phantasm". So yes, "Hood" is good, "Phantasm" is an animated classic :)
The plots of both films seem to be roughly similar.
shareHow are they similar? There's no love story in Hood and half of Phantasm is a love story.
shareBoth films center around a rival masked vigilante (revealed to be someone from Bruce's past) who lack Batman's moral code and has a vendetta against the Joker.
Mask of the Phantasm is better if you ask me. Under The Red Hood is a great movie also but suffers from way too much supernatural elements
shareIn terms of action I would say both were about the same. The cliche part that really pushed Mask of the Phantasm over Red Hood was the love story. They put in this chick who almost made Bruce Wayne quit being Batman just so he can finally be happy. We're always caught up with Batman is a badass and can never be happy and we're given a cohesive story where he had the chance to.
(SPOILERS from Dark Knight Rises - Alfred talked about seeing a happy Bruce Wayne and we got one where it wasn't really all that cohesive at the end of the movie. If they had used some storylines from Mask of the Phantasm it would've made it more believeable.)
The Red Hood was more about Jason trying to set up his scenario where Batman would just murder the Joker. I wasn't really all that emotionally invested in it.

He probably means the whole "revenge on the Joker" thing. Other than that, I see little similarities...
shareBatman Beyond: Return of the Joker
