4. Batman Begins
5. Batman Forever
6. The Dark Knight
7. Batman & Robin

I haven't yet seen The Mask of the Phantasm, but I am uberhyped to do so, having just discovered the brilliance of Batman: The Animated Series. I think Batman: The Animated Series is the best portrayal of Batman I've ever seen, and the best representation of the nature of the character. As a result, MOTP, which is essentially a spin-off film, will most likely shoot to the top of this list.

reply

If you don't like TDK or BB I doubt you'll like MOTP

reply

Why not?

I love the animated series, more so than any of the movies of Batman. Is MOTP very different from the show?

reply

Well TDK and BB are like the comics. And MOTP is like the comics. Batman and Batman Returns are NOTHING like the comics. So you might not like it.

reply

I've never read the comics, so I don't have the comics to go by when comparing the films. I just think that the animated series and Burton's Batman films better convey Batman as a character and the world of Gotham as a dark and morbid fantasy land. In Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, there is no essence of fantasy or any real darkness, so I find them fundamentally empty and devoid of emotion.

reply

Wow..................i don't even think its possible to find character in characterless films and not find character in character driven films. But you did it so I tip my hat to you.

Right, I myself didn't care that much for either Begins or Dark Knight, but I love Phantasm (and am on the hunt for a Return of the Joker uncut edition). I'd say the film is only different from the Animated Series in two manners.

1. There is more focus on Bruce Wayne's 'normal' persona in the film than the series. It focuses rather a lot on what made Bruce become the Caped Crusader.

2. Joker is allowed to be a bit more like his mainstream comic counterpart in the sense that he has more freedom to kill people, which couldn't be shown on the series.

Yes, it's similar in tone to the comics and contains several story elements inspired by Year Two.

Those two main differences that you have highlighted don't make the film very different from the series. It's a movie, so different narrative areas concerning Batman and Gotham are allowed to be explored.

Other than that, I assume, the film is in the same style as the series, ie orgasmically awesomely brilliant. :D

reply

No, certainly not radically different at all. I'd also say that out of all the visual adaptations I've seen, Bruce Timm's animated franchise probably captures the spirit of the comics the best. Even when changes are made, his series seem to really understand the iconic characters of the DC mythos and capture their intended tone. They have substance and they also have style. They incorporate aspects taken from the entire history of the comic books, yet also create their own ideas (some of which have even been integrated into the mainstream comics, such as Harley Quinn and the portrayal of Mr Freeze as a tragic villain). I fear Western animation may never replicate the sheer depth of the DCAU.

Before I begin I just wanted to note how impressive all three of the Batman serieses have been and how much of an impact they haev had on the entertainment industry. The "Burton-verse" was the first comic book movie that could really have been taken seriously and not viewed as mere kids entertainment. The Animated series and the films did the exact same thing for cartoons and proved that animation was not limited for kids. I also find it impressive that the direct to video movies such as Subzero are really on par with the that had theatrical release. Now, The Nolan series had a similar impact in that comic book films could be set in a realistic envirornment and still be believeable. Having said that I wanted to state that it has been a while since I seen some of these films(more in particular Batman Returns) so they may change if I see them again. So without further adu here is the ranking for all the Batman movies that I have seen.

1) The Dark Knight
2) Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
3) Batman
4) Batman Begins
5) Batman: Subzero
6) Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
7) Batman Returns
8) Batman Forever
