Winona Ryder was nominated for an oscar???!!!!

Are you kidding me?! She was terrible! she totally did not belong in this movie!! she belongs in teen angst movies like Heathers and Reality Bites, those are tailor made for her. What the hell was Scorsese thinking??? This was a great film, but Ryder was one of the worst casting choices I've ever encountered in a movie. And she was actually nominated for an academy award to boot! WOW!!!

She was most good in this, most good.

She was average.

She was good. Maybe not great, but definitely good.

She does very little period work, and I would have assumed that she would be one of those actors who can't play anyone but a modern person, because they don't understand the mindset of other eras. But I would have been wrong to assume that, because she did understand the most important thing about a woman like May... that unlike modern women, she is NOT free to be herself. No, this is someone who's expected to hide both her true feelings and her strong will under a cloak of propriety and gentility, to act submissive when she knows damn well she needs to take charge.

She gets a thumbs up from me.

She is a limited actress who was quite well cast in the part, but really didn't deserve awards consideration and I was delighted with the far more deserving Paquin's shock defeat of WR.

Pfeiffer gave by far the best performance among the ladies of TAOI but even choosing from the supporting cast, I thought Miriam Margolyes made a much stronger impression than Ryder in a much smaller role.

Ryder's best work was earlier, in Lucas and Heathers.

THATS FAIR.
