Just saw X-Files S6E2 called Drive with Bryan Cranston. The story was written by Vince Gilligan. This show brought the two together before Cranston went on to become Walter White in Breaking Bad.
Enjoyable X-Files. Showed how X-Files was going to look having the set move to Cali.

shareMan, I am right there with you. You're one of the few who thinks this. The X Files was great when it was creepy. Those quirky episodes.....just made the show into a parody and really didn't belong on the show. It kinda annoys me when I see a top 10 episode list and it's near dominated by these types of episodes.
shareExactly. The show didn't start out that way and the majority of the episodes were not like that. That doesn't mean every episode has to be deadly serious, but there's a difference between lighthearted and, as you say, parody.

90% of the episodes were serious. Good to inject some quirkiness into the subject matter every so often.
I said I get lightheartedness. The "quirkiness" (farcical parody, really) did not fit the rest of the show at all. Even worse, they weren't even funny. Those episodes are so far removed from the essence of the show, I don't get how people can count them among their favourites.

shareNo, that's not at all the same! Lightheartedness means it's not serious. Quirky means weird, and in this case (very childish) self-referential parody, which did not fit the rest of the show at all.
Having the same subject does not mean it has the same spirit. Alien and Mars Attacks! are both about aliens, but aren't a thing alike.
I think maybe you take entertainment too seriously ...it's not like X-Files was a documentary on the holocaust.

Too much info. lol. This escalated rather quickly. I didnΒ΄t mind the comedic episodes but in very small doses. I actually really loved the episode Arcadia which has some humorous moments but is still a pretty good MOTW. Some of those quirky episodes were not good at all. Xcops was terrible, I hated the show Cops, so having the X-files shot in that style just made it so much worse. Could very well be the worst episode in the whole series for me.
shareClyde Bruckman's Final Repose is on that list for me along with the terrific ones you've chosen. I still get a reminder of it whenever the subject of Auto-Erotic Asphyxiation comes up.
shareI'm with you in that the quirky one are the ones that have held up the best over time. Initially, the mythology eps were my favourite but it eventually all became too convoluted. On repeat viewing, you realize how many of them were simply treading water to keep the series going.
You picked some good ones to which I would add:
War of the Coprophages... solely for that clever trick they did which made it seem like a real cockroach was crawling across your TV. I actually jumped at that.
Jose Chung's From Outer Space. The joke about Scully's hair colour, the cameos from Jesse Ventura and Alex Trebeck... and one of the few times Charles Nelson Reilly didn't seem like an annoying neurotic.
I also enjoyed Humbug -- the one with the circus freaks -- solely for the monologue by the main character about how he'd rather be living a life outside the norm than be a self-righteous suit... as the camera pans over to Mulder in the distance.
Although the update seasons didn't hit the heights of the original series, Forehead Sweat was a great one, especially that last line by Skinner.
Forgot to add Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man. Not so much quirky, but intriguing for its glimpse into the history and mind of the main villain. Excellent acting on the part of William Davis. The bit where he learns that he hasn't got what it takes to be a serious writer actually made me feel sorry for him.

shareOh, I do not remember the names, but there was one "Christmas chapter " which was very entertaining as well as a chapter in which Mulder changed his physical appearance to some defense department employee. I remember too "3 wishes ".
