What if the Green Ranger was killed off?

In the original Japanese version he was killed off. If they did the same in the US versions, what would change? What would the lasting impact be?
Tommy was just a guy who showed up halfway the show and became their friend and teammate, there wasn't the whole drama that went back millions of years of the red and green ranger being brothers. If would not have had the same impact and would've been totally inappropriate for the US version which was much more lighthearted.
