From your perspective when did MTV start to go downhill?
I thought MTV really started to suck by 1998, to me 1997 was the last good year of MTV.

shareYeah pretty much around the time The Real World kicked off and they started moving away from music videos. VH1 followed them not too long after. Even CMT went the same route. I just use Youtube now to watch new music videos.
shareJackass was the last good thing MTV ever did
shareReal World and reality tv and the complete move away from music videos and original programs like "Beavis & Butthead".
shareShortly after "Video Killed the radio Star"!
shareWhen this ended
sharewhen season 2 of the real world came out. it was done..
shareyes.
in my mind it was already going down hill by 1988-89
I guess it just depends on how old you were at the time. MTV was just hitting it prime by then. you had headbangers ball and I think 120 minutes started around then. and Yo mtv raps. you had some animation stuff that ran at night for the potheads. there was beavis and butthead. you had amazing music videos. all the DJ's were pretty cool. MTV was a culture phenomenon.
shareI'm born in 1980 and to me MTV was a good channel to watch until 1998.
shareI was 15 when it was born, and for years it was nothing at all except 24hr videos back to back, around the clock. that is what it started as and IMO all the bullshit shows yes even the ones you named, no offense, are a bastardization of the original product.
people talking about music is not music. IMHO
(and moreover, those 'shows' weren't even people talking about music to begin with, they were mostly about faddish pop-culture movements.)
as i said earlier, they went off the rails when they veered from videos only. i think that was around 88-90 give or take.
IMHO
what they should've done i think is to launch a mtv-2 and let that one be for real world and game shows etc. leave the original one alone.
but every channel did the same damn thing. weather channel was one 24hr coverage, and in the late 90s they began that 'storm stories' BS and it was a one off, until a year later they began adding other ones, about disasters etc, and then it became every day 8-10pm, and then five years later it was DISASTER SHOWS 20 HOURS OUT OF EVERY DAY and the 'squeezed in' the weather when they could.
fuck all them motherfuckers they can all suck my dick for ruining good TV for the folks like me. they did it for the mighty dollar. fucking sux
