This movie was ahead of its time before Braveheart, Gladiator, the Patriot, Last Samurai, 300 ,Apocalypto the ending is a CINEMATIC TRIUMPH in all levels. The Academy's snub is outrageous and the best sound award because of the copyright issues/multiple composers wof the the STELLAR soundtrack wasn't enough it needed to be nominated in several categories like :
BEST PICTURE
BEST DIRECTOR
BEST SUPPORTING ROLE FOR WES STUDI
BEST SOUNDTRACK
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
BEST EDITING
BEST SOUND MIXING
BEST SOUND
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Even though UNFORGIVEN was great that same year it is a bit overrated the Academy really missed the mark not nominating movies like Dracula,Leon Last of the Mohicans and R.Scott's1492(for best ost mainly)

Pffft...soundtrack based on 1990’s THE GAEL by Dougie MacLean, the unofficial Scottish national anthem.

Still a likeable film.

Wow first time I've heard the Gael, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JuC1hYCdvs

Nessie would be furious!

The original composer was credited. I thought the movie version was superior. Much more moving.

1492 is really a underrated film. One of Scott's neglected masterpieces imo.

Last of The Mohican's is up there probably alongside Heat as Mann's best work. Shame that Daniel Day Lewis didn't do more action roles as he slipped into it here quite easily. Wes Studi is a great villain who you buy his reason for his actions. Madeleine Stowe English accent aside, did a fine job. Wonderful soundtrack. And it has one of the best endings ever involving Russell Mean's turning into a bad ass and just destroying Studi, who doesn't even get a lick in at all. Some of the best cinematography too you are likely to see.

Michael Mann at his peak was one of the best around.
