Has anybody seen this?

Wow! I am suprised to find that so few people have seen this movie! I've seen it a couple of times, and it has to be one of the most ironic and heart warming films I have ever seen. Why on earth is it only rated 6.2?

Gah! This just has to be one of the best films of all time for how it mixes the drama with the comedy. The plot is both believable and ironically hilarious, and the rooftop scene is just priceless!

So, please share why you liked or disliked it.

On a side note, did the crew at MMPA have their ears clogged when they saw this film before giving it a PG-13, or is most of the language edited to get that rating, like in Billy Elliot? I have only seen the U.K. edition, which is rated 15. Still, it by no means makes this a bad movie, rather it adds believability and depth to the main character.

My reasons for loving this film...

I don't laugh much, ESPECIALLY at comedies. I don’t know, the standard comedy just strikes me as lame somehow.
But this movie is hilarious in a way that, well, it's just hilarious.

More importantly, I just think this film is a remarkable look at the nature of TRUTH. That underlying theme is presented so well, so effortlessly by the story's nature that it's just... beautiful.

A note: As to your UK version, I have not seen the US cut, either. My only opportunity to see this came in Nederland, with Dutch subtitles. The title there was ACCIDENTAL HERO and the opening credits (a peculiar orange) must have been cut in on a cheap digi platform somewhere.

Hey, this is one absolutely great film - I've watched it many times, with pure delight.
IT IS really funny, unlike many 'comedies', its humour is of the inteligent type, the cast is wonderful - and, of course, Dustin Hoffman is superb

I'd give this movie an 8/10. 10/10 just to boost the ratings.

Seriously, I caught this movie on the WB a couple of times, once on Comedy Central and decided the movie was worth having. Not only is Dustin Hoffman an outstanding actor, but I really can't see anyone else playing Bernie LePlante.

Very underrated movie.

I love the movie. I think reading about or seeing any really heroic act puts a smile on my face. This movie was also a comedy, so that added to the smile. It's true that Hero is a bit more cynical than some of the older Hollywood movies, in which the good guy is pure good through and through. The hero of this movie is actually a sleezy guy but with a streak of goodness. That makes him a more complicated character, more appropriate for the cynical age in which we live.

The movie is a fantasy, in the sense that a sleezy guy like that probably would never do something that heroic in real life. But it's still a lot of fun.

This was one of those films I have never bothered with, but it was on TV tonight and the Open had just finished; Padraig Harrington won, and I was in a good mood.

It was a great movie; a real redemtion protagonist. Fine acting and a good script. All the characters were caricatures, but great caircatures. Top quality stuff

I've seen this movie more than 12 times and I think it is the best movie ever made in this catagorey (comedy and drama) I think that Dustin Hoffman deserves an oscar in this movies, it is sooo simple and sooo touching, with no cinema or director complications, just the great, great, so great performance of Hoffman and Davis.

It's a "could have been movie' IMO...could have been so much better than it ended up being.

It's too long...resulting in slow pacing in scenes that do have good set ups.(E.G. hospital and ledge scenes.

There's not enough snappy dialogue.

The satire is not sharp enough and is dulled further by the sentimentality of some scenes.

In a movie with a great cast, the cameos for me are the ones who stand out; Chevy Chase (doing Larry King I think), Bernie's lawyer (one of the Cusack clan)and Tom Arnold's barman...rather than outstanding performances by the leads...which in itself is kind of a worry.
