"We follow orders or people die!"

My brother came up with an interesting, albeit sinister theory. Regarding this quote from Colonel Jessup when he took the stand.

He believes the aforementioned statement was an unconscious confession from the Colonel's part. In other words. He's basically admitting that private Santiago's death was a result of him not following orders by breaking the chain of command. Something like that.

Liked I said. It's pretty dark theory.

Nah, it's not that deep. The implication is that as warfighters, Marines must follow orders or people die as a result of the non-compliance - in combat, in firefights, while standing guard. Not that Marines are punished with death as a consequence for not following orders.

While I agree w/ aavfreak that it's not a subconscious confession, per se, it does at least explain why Jessup was so unapologetic and unsympathetic about Santiago's death. In his mind, Santiago died "tragically" as a result of his own disobedience, leaving Jessup himself completely free of blame.
