“Please tell me you have something more lieutant”

Why would he say that then be surprised that he was being charged with a crime? Was he just playing mind games?

Jessup was belittling Kafee.

He was trying to intimidate Kaffee and shatter his confidence. That way Kaffee would back off.

"He was trying to intimidate Kaffee and shatter his confidence. That way Kaffee would back off".

What he said☝️

Think he wanted to give the impression that Kaffee was just wasting everyone's time "were these really the questions I was sent to ask?" And that he was unfit to work on a military case of this magnitude. "These men are on trial for their lives!" "Please tell me that their lawyer hasn't pinned their hopes up to a phone bill".

That last part made me chuckle 😁

The above answers. Plus he was there as a witness, and was only concerned with the 2 marines being found guilty - it may not even have occurred to him that if he got caught out during questioning, he'd be arrested himself.
Not out of dumbness, more because he'd have felt untouchable with that rule that if Kafee would be the one to be punished if he even directly accused Jessop of a crime. So when he says "tell me you have something more", i think he just means in terms of trying to get his clients (the 2 marines) off the hook.
