I've heard more technically correct accents than Cruise, but I loved the movie anyway. His accent seems to get less and less Irish the more you get into the movie...and Kidman's hair was a bit scary, too.
shareWhat IMDB says is that Cruise's accent is "hokey but accurate" which means that he's trying to do the correct regional accent but failing whereas Nicoles was just wrong to begin with whether she nailed it or not.

shareboth their accents were utterly atrocious and cringe-worthy. i mean there is such a thing as accent coaches!!!

The accent is indeed horrible, but it's definitely not the worst I've ever heard. How about Kevin Costner in...anything?

i agree Charlie about Billy Connolly especially in The last samurai. It was simply awful. All 'dat dare ting yer honour' for example. I dont understand why they just didnt make his character Scotish 'cos it wouldn't have made a difference to the story. Billy Connolly by a mile then Tom Cruise i reckon
shareYeah it was very poor. Richar Gere also had a terrible irish accent in the jackal
shareThe Irish accent is one of the hardest to fake. I don't think anyone has pulled it off properly yet. Whereas Mel Gibson, Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe seem to have no problem faking an American accent.
shareDuh, faking an American accent is easy because of the HUGE libraries of media that feature American voices in dialogue played all over the world. It is so easy to immerse oneself in to it with a huge variety.
An American going the other way faces the opposite scenario, in that there are only a small fraction of choices for any given "foriegn" (to an American) accent.
That's a good point actually! Never really thought of that!

yeh, it is quite bad, but you kind of get used to it, and as its little tom, lets let him off! I think its a really good film!
shareI noticed that as the film goes along he stops using an acccent. Or maybe its that I got used to it.
shareLook, in the case of Cruise, he got training from a dialect coach! I'm pretty sure his accent is dead on. By the way, ppl in those days had DIFFERENT accents compared to now. (this is the case with every language)

Since Cruises character spent more time in America his original accent began to disappear.
