Did this deserve Best Picture over 'Unforgiven'?
Do you think this deserved Best Picture over Unforgiven. I personally think the right decisions was made and that Unforgiven was the best picture of 1992

shareA quick answer, NO! The Unforgiven was awesome.
I am a very decisive person, I think.
Yes, it's the best film I've seen from 1992 in any language.
If I could drop dead right now, I'd be the happiest man alive.
I think so. Howards End would have been my personal pick, though, but The Crying Game was certainly one of the most entertaining and absorbing films of that year. I'm glad Neil Jordan got the Oscar for original screenplay and beat the one for Unforgiven.
shareMy personal choice would have been 'Howards End'......one of the finest period films ever made if not the best.
sharenot a chance, Unforgiven is much better. When there's no more room in hell, The dead will walk the earth...
YES, it did deserve it. I find, even knowing the plot twist that comes does not take away from enjoying multiple viewings. TCG is one of the few films I've paid to see two or more times in the theatre. With U, I was good for a while after the first time. Then when it showed up years later I watched it again. It was still good, but I didn't get any more out of it--as opposed to TCG, in which I continue to discover nuances.
IMO, Miranda Richardson played a far more compelling villain than Gene Hackman. I'm surprised her name doesn't come up more when discussing all-time best villains (particularly female). That moment she shows up in his apartment is a chiller. There just seems to be a lot more complexity to the characters and story than U--which is still a good film.
There have been worse injustices in the BP category by far (1952, 1995, and 2005 spring to mind).

I would love to know what complexities your referring too, I love Richardson generally but I found a one dimensional if anything, Hackman's character had far more complexity and nuance, I think the jail cell scene is above anything Richardson does in this
shareI wasn't referring to her character being complex, but Fergus and Dil. Jude is pretty straightforward in that she would never have any second thoughts about shooting Jody. (Why Maguire didn't just assign her that task when the time came is odd, although if I recall it may have been because they wanted proof positive that Fergus was dedicated to the IRA.)
If I had to put my finger on why I would select TCG over U would probably be Fergus as a lead character over Will Munny. (I had to look up what Eastwood's character's name was.) I just found him to be more intriguing, conflicted, and Stephen Rea's performance kept me watching his face.
With the people with whom I saw both films (different people for each), TCG just generated more discussion--although I did meet a U fan later who could talk about it at length.
Who's to say why some films move people more than others? Unforgiven is an excellent film. I read a blog entry somewhere by a woman who listed ten winning films she thought really deserved the Best Picture, and this was one of them--but of the ten she picked, this one had the most follow-up comments begging to differ with her. Interesting.

I think the great thing about Unforgiven is that... Gene Hackman isn't the villain.
shareNo. Unforgiven got its richly deserved Oscar. It was the best film of that year - and in my opinion the whole of the 1990s.
As for 'The Crying Game' - well, it was an interesting film, but I don't think it was as good as the critics claimed it was. A case of being overrated I would say. I thought that Jordan's earlier film 'Mona Lisa' was actually better than this film. I suppose the screenplay and story premise are interesting - although, the twist was perhaps a bit too overrated in my opinion.
Hadn't thought about either in a while, but since you asked, I thought one of the best films of 1992 wasn't even nominated for Best Picture: Malcolm X. I would definitely have given it the nod over the schmaltz-o-rama that was Scent of a Woman.
I like Unforgiven, but I would rank it fourth behind The Crying Game, Howard's End (Merchant-Ivory's best--with the possible exception of A Room with a View), and Malcolm X. Those three are a little more "must-see", IMO.

Yep. Yes indeed. I thought it was well done in every aspect except for Whitaker who was simply miscast.
shareUnforgiven was a lousy movie that shouldn't have been nominated..
1992, the two best movies I saw were Malcolm X & Resevoir Dogs...
I have not seen A Few Good Men yet, but of the 1992 nominees - Scent of a Woman is by far the best of the other 4
Unforgiven - 4 / 10
The Crying Game - 6 / 10
Scent of a Woman - 8 /10
