Is the movie as bad as everybody says it is?

Hi. Just to let you know, that I never seen the Buffy movie. Only the TV show. But I did hear some negative comments about it, And I just want to ask, is it really that bad? Do you recommend it? Do you just hate because there is no Sarah Michelle Gellar? And btw, I heard some characters mention that Buffy actually set the gymnasium on fire before moving to Sunnydale. Did this actually happen in the movie? Sorry. I know we are all entitled to our opinion, but I don't want to start watching it and be all like "this movie sucks!"

It's ridiculously campy. But at least it doesn't take itself to seriously, like the TV show.

I mean, the show tried to be all serious drama... with fairy tale characters. Thank the rabid fangirls and faboys for hyping a badly acted "drama" with vampires that takes itself far too seriously into something it isn't.

It is a fundamentally flawed film, but I don't think it's quite as bad as it has been made out to be in the past. I think it is on the border of being a "bad film", but it has some decent humor and fun ideas... it's just ruined by a poor execution.

Buffy doesn't burn down the gym in this film. (She was supposed to in Joss Whedon's original script, but he didn't have any creative control and his script was re-written repeatedly by several people, so scenes like the gym burning down ended up being cut)

If you are a fan of the series, I think you should give it a shot if for no other reason than to be able to say that you saw it. I understand you don't want to start watching and then realize you don't like it, but there's really no other way to figure out whether or not you'd like it.

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

I view the movie as a satire on vampires as a whole, since it largely portrays them as inept, lackadaisical, and quite humorously.

As a comedy, it's got a lot of great dark humor thrown in and the acting is average. I rated it a 7/10, because at least at the time it released, it was original.

I think Leonard Maltin gave it a pretty good review.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a movie version of the show, this is not it. Joss was not happy with the movie as it came out, which is one of the reasons the show exists. If the movie had come out as he wanted, we probably wouldn't have the series.

The 92 movie is good cheesy early 90s fun. It has a lot of great one liners that you can practically smell the Joss on. It's a great popcorn flick, but lacks the depth of what the show became. If a fun romp with a valley girl turned vampire slayers is what you're after you'll have fun with the movie. If you're after a movie version of the show, you'll end up dissapointed. I enjoy both, saw the movie first and tuned into the show because I liked the movie for what it was. While the show is quite different from the movie, I do like both.

And no, in the movie she did not set the gym on fire. That was in his original script, which is the basis of the show, and there are some things that are set up in the movie that were not Joss's ideas and he ignored them for the show. If you're interested in seeing some what Joss wanted the movie to be, the original script was turned into a comic, and can be found in the first Buffy Omnibus, along with several other comics that lead up to the start of the TV series. If you're familiar with the movie, it's similar, but there are some striking differences. The other comics answer questions like what happened to Pike, the male lead in the movie, goes into some background that was hinted at from Buffy's past in the show, and even shows some of Giles journey to become her watcher.

Honestly the movie is not bad just not taken directly as Joss had wanted it to portray so it does come off as a cheesy early 90's flick. I liked the movie but I was a Luke Perry and Kristen Swanson fan so probably made it easier for me to like it.

I'll be more honest though if you watched the series and then watch the movie you might not like it at all, because the Series is awesome and everything Joss wanted Buffy the Vampire Slayer to be like. It's like comparing apples to oranges, they can not really be compared because they are so different from one another. Yet, everyone has their own opinion so I would suggest watching movie and see for yourself, and let yourself decide.

Kristy Swanson, not Kristen Swanson.

Between the near-obsolete serious horror movie, and the campy slasher film, there is a grey area of dark comedy 'scary' movies. They share several key elements: a mythos as background (mummies, vampires, werewolves, undead, zombies, etc.), sexual tension between young couples, and (of course) pitch black humour.

The masterpiece of the genre is, of course, _An American Werewolf in London_. This movie is much below that standard, but is still, however, partially enjoyable.

First off, I've never been a fan of the series. I may have run a couple of episodes as background noise in my TV, without paying much attention. I just watched the movie (by chance), and managed to follow it to the end. So it's not terrible, as a rule I stop watching the moment a movie gets very bad.

The last 25 minutes or so, I was close, though. Something seems to have gone amiss toward the ending, with several hints and threads unresolved. It seems about 20% of the movie may have been left on the editing floor.

However, if you know the genre, and know you're not supposed to take it seriously but rather find the humour in it, and can enjoy some of the atmosphere (granted, that is perhaps the most important thing that fails toward the end), this movie is watchable.

I'd give it a 5 out of 10.
