Worst Dracula ever made

This is a Mel Brooks-like parody but without the humor.

reply

You probably refer to the Dracula film Brooks made in 1995, three years after this film released, not this one. Brooks' film did borrow some parts from this film but his was a comedy not Coppola's

reply

No I’m not. That one wasn’t great but still better than Coppola’s misfire.

reply

One of the best, actually. I love the visuals, the music and sound.

reply

This is the best Dracula movie ever. What is your ethnicity?

reply

I think you overstate the case (I have seen a large number of cheap, and or bland and or stupid Dracula films), but I do think that this is the biggest, most disappointing Dracula ever. The idea of the romance of Dracula and Minna via reincarnation was was used in the Richard Matheson/Dan Curtis film, so it didn't even have the value of being original. I see what Coppola was doing; a romantic tragedy filmed operatically... But that doesn't mean I have to like it.

reply

It’s a cartoon. Nothing about it is scary. Dracula should be terrifying and he isn’t in this. This romantic fantasy is nothing but a bigger budget version of Twilight.

reply

Dracula with Bela Lugosi isn't terrifying.

reply

I agree. So far the best Dracula is the 1979 version with Frank Langella.

reply

Right on! I hope you've seen the Scream Factory Theatrical Edition bluray with correct color.

reply

Do you think Rob Zombies "The Munsters" is light years better ?

reply

Are you defending a bloated, ridiculously overdone version of Dracula by comparing it to a ghastly waste of time children's movie? I could cite Billy the Kid Versus Dracula for comparison, but it wouldn't make the Coppola film any better.

reply

There's too much sexual content in Dracula Dead and Loving it to call it a children's film. Personally, I am not a big fan of this Dracula film cause I don't like the romance between Dracula and Mina. There are some cool scenes in it though. And Anthony Hopkins was excellent as Van Velsing.

reply

I was responding to Devilman's reference to "The Munsters" which is pretty certainly a childrens film... I only got about 10-15 minutes into it.

reply

I was being sarcastic about it.

Yes I agree the with you Dracula + Minna (resurrected soul) love story was stupid but the film really takes the cinematic representation of Dracula to another level for something done in 90s.

Of course another downfall of this great film is the casting of Keanu Reeves as Johnathan.

I still prefer the Hammer films and planning to watch Dracula (1979) with Frank Langella

reply

Beware another "romantic" Dracula. There're a few good things about the Frank Langella Dracula, but it is not good overall.

reply

Thanks for the warning.

Man if they only make a Dracula in the modern world horror film, something close to what they tried to do with Dracula A.D. 1972 and The Satanic Rites of Dracula.

Sadly all the good writers are gone in Hollywood.

reply

Personally I don't want a modern day one. Too much modern technology gives the main protagonists too much of an advantage. Like you could just sprinkle garlic powder all over Lucy's clothes to protect her.

reply

Most of us like our protagonists in a vampire film. We want the vampire destroyed at all costs

reply

Those two Dracula films by Hammer were actually pretty bad. Christopher Lee should have retired from playing the vampire by then.
Better ones were the original Horror Of Dracula and Dracula Has Risen From The Grave.

reply

Oh. I don't want to see that one either.

reply

I agree. This movie was basically ruined by the overuse of special effects that had the opposite effect of making it a horror tale and more of an animated fantasy.
It made the movie look ridiculous. Hollywood knows all too well how to screw up a potentially good horror movie by doing this.
