Why is the world is this film rated so low?
This is one of the best movies ever! The meaning of it, the switching of roles...you laugh every two minutes if not more it's just great. Great Eddie Murphy movie second only to Coming To America.

Gotta disagree there. Especially with The Golden Child and Beverly Hills Cop 3. Beverly Hills Cop 1&2 great, 48 hrs & Another 48 hrs, great, Coming to America? Classic.
shareA lot of Eddie's movies are rated low. I think it's a cultural bias is all. You have to look at who's voting.
shareI couldn't agree with you more.
share"A lot of Eddie's movies are rated low. I think it's a cultural bias is all. You have to look at who's voting. "
Please spare me!
the reason this film would be rated low would be it's crap and entirely unbelieveable.
The "ugly friend" is halle berry??
yeah right
about as believeable as Rachel leigh cook being the ugly girl at school in "she's all that"......
Halle wasn't the "ugly friend." She was the "good girl", which Marcus' character wanted to avoid at all costs - something a pretty boy/player would do in real life, too! The whole point of the movie is that Marcus takes advantage of good, pretty girls but fell in love/lust/infatuation/whatever when he met his match in Jacqueline - the "bad girl." Plus, at the time, the movie was playing on Robin Givens' "most hated woman in America" image (due to her infamous marriage to Mike Tyson) and Halle wasn't Miss Glamour Girl that she is now. If Halle's character was supposed to be the "ugly friend", then why did Gerard's daddy wink at her when she first saw her and "good pick, junior!" And Gerard's mother notes over Thanksgiving dinner, "She looks like one of Marcus' girls!" which was met by awkward silence and Marcus' nervous laughter and switch of subject.
Moviebuff, did you even LOOK at this movie? No wonder Boomerang is rated so low. Stupid people like this who miss the whole point of the movie are voting. *rolling eyes*
Boomerang is a CLASSIC with many quotables. I guess it's a black thang and some people just wouldn't understand.
because not everyone agrees with. for instance me. i would rate this typical and average american film about 4 on imdb.

No, I don't agree because people are different. Why are you being arrogant?
-"not born, sh1t into existence"-
Its rated low because some people can't stand to see a film depicting successful black people living in a world that hardly contains ANY whites.
This is actually one of the best Eddie films made, and outside of Eddie himself (who plays against his normal style of character), the overall cast is great, and the story is wonderful.
I guarantee you if this was about white people, it'd have been praised, lapped up, and adored.
Hmm, the whole black vs whites thing didn't even hit me until you brought it up.
-"not born, sh1t into existence"-
There is definately a cultural bias though throughout the voting on IMD. I guess some films simply don't hit black and white people in the same way. I have watched films in cinemas with a majority black audience and also in cinemas with a majority white audience and quite often the reaction (for example to jokes) is not the same. But it doesn't only apply to comedies films such as Colour purple and Get on the Bus should have higher ratings in my opinion.
shareDefinitely. This is one of the more positive displays of African-American males. Hollywood seems to be more interested in protraying brothers as 'playas' and ganstas'. I was in heaven were I saw Eddie's job and its all black staff. This and "Coming To America" are two of Eddie's best.
shareWow. What a thread. This is one of the worst Eddie Murphy movies. His best movie was Nutty Professor followed by Bev Hills Cop. Boomerang is just garbage. Distinguished Gentleman was more enjoyable than this melodramatic rubbish.
Didn't even think about race until some of you brought it up.
I would say that we like the film so much b cause we're black & can relate 2 more than white people, wat films do u like with a mainly white cast, I like Shallow Hal & american pie
shareI loved this movie. Thought it was a great murphy film and one of the classics of the 90 movies, but I'm so tired of the whole white v. black attempts that people automatically throw out when people disagree about their opinion of the movie. It's just that - an opinion. I'm not black but that doesn't mean that I couldn't relate to it. That's just a cheap cop out.
shareI just turned this jive turkey of a movie OFF, after just 40 minutes. Not funny; WHERE were the laughs? Halle Berry looked GREAT, though. Robin Givens? Her Star burned out, a long time ago.
The previous poster called this film, "one of the classics of the 90's movies"? I DON'T THINK SO!
I'm the bad guy? How'd that happen?
Michael Douglas ("D-FENS"), in "Falling Down"

i must disagree with you, blah123-1 about the black vs. white thing being a "cheap cop out." i disagree because i see it all the time. those of us (myself included) like to say things like "we're all the same" and things of that nature, but it's not true. what is more accurate to say is "no person is more or less valuable because of his or her race", but to say blacks and whites are the same is not true. we relate to things differently, we find different things funny, etc. etc. of course i'm speaking in general terms (as there are exceptions to my theory), but i honestly believe that the reason this movie is rated to low is because of exactly that. it's an all-black film, written by a black person (eddie murphy wrote the story) and it's intended for a black audience. every black person i know LOVES this movie and considers it either the 2nd or 3rd best movie eddie murphy has ever done (most consider it 2nd only to coming to america and i agree with them). those of you that are about to bash my comments, keep in mind that i am stating my OPINION, which i am certainly permitted to have. i'll gladly entertain opposion opinions, however. actually, i'd be interested to hear the things people look for in a comedy that aren't in this one.
sharethis film was voted #21 of the top 25 black movies of last 25 years on BET.com. that's how you know some haters are the reason for the low rating.
share[deleted]
You know i'm actually tired of the word "hater". I actually enjoyed the movie. I could care less how it's rated. It's not like IMDB has so much power that the movie would cease to exist if its rated a 2. lol
shareI feel ya tiffanykk2002!!!
shareIt was nice to watch, but to put it on any best of list is a stretch. The cast was excellent, but the writing was average. You could tell the end of the story way before the end. There were some very funny lines, but overall it was supposed to be a love story, which was so predictable.
This wasn't rated good or bad, because it was a black movie. You can't have it both ways though. There were so many black people in the building, it might as well have been on another planet. It steoreotyped itself, and sold the story for a quick laugh, as opposed to a long term classic. I enjoyed the movie, but it has been rated correctly by movie watchers.
i don't know...i can't think of ANY love story with an "unpredictable" ending. and owning this movie, i think there is a LOT of credence to the cultural difference idea. not necessarily bias, per se, but the differences are obvious. for example, i used to read about how Albert Brooks was the funniest man in Hollywood (or the WORLD for that matter), yet i have never really laughed when watching any of his movies ("Muse" being the last one attempted). by and large, audiences can laugh at certain things universally...like pairing different people (i.e. lethal weapon, rush hour, etc.) in a buddy film or misplaced identity. but when it comes to a movie like boomerang, which i ALWAYS liked very much for the record, i can see how there is a cultural difference. much the same way that most white people i talk to think the Blue Collar movie was funnier than the Original Kings of Comedy (assuming they had watched the latter movie). if you can relate to something, it'll strike a chord with you.
shareThe movie is rated low because people want to see Eddie Murphy shucking and jiving and he's not. It's really that simple. I've noticed that "Black" movies are rated lower on IMDB but most people complain about Boomerang because Eddie Murphy wasn't being a complete Sambo. The same thing happens to Jim Carrey when he's not being Fire Marshal Bill on camera.
shareI am not sure either why this movie is rated low. I am watching it now on Bravo and I am enjoying even more than when I saw it in 1992 when it came out. I think I appreciate the movie more after been knocked over by so many more brainless movies since then.

This is one of Eddie's most underrated films and I'll never understand why it never got the attention it deserved. I think COMING TO AMERICA pales in comparison to this film.
