I don't understand the boat explosion

When Frank gets Fletcher out of the boat, and they're on the little pier, the boat explodes. I assume that it was some kind of remote detonation, like the boat had been rigged with explosives, but I don't know that this is ever explained.

After the boat explodes, everyone is in a panic at the cabin, packing up all their things and getting ready to leave.

Why would the boat be rigged to explode? Did the killer assume that they might use it and so rigged some kind of timed device? If the killer was watching, why would he explode the boat when Rachel wasn't in it, let alone anyone else?

I'm sure I am completely missing something, but I don't know what it is.

Yeah, I agree with that statement that the boat was rigged for Frank so that Rachel would be an easier target to get to. There wasnt a timed explosion on the boat either, It was set to explode when the boat stopped moving.

I would say it wasn't meant to kill anyone. What happened was exactly what the killer intended. I believe it was remote detonated, for them all to see and hear it right then, so to cause increased panic, basically toying with them, to let them know he had found them.

Maybe he saw Frank in the boat earlier, and figured that he would go back into the boat again. Basically, he wanted to kill the bodygaurd so that he could kill Rachael much easier....

the boat was rigged so that when the motor started the bomb was activated. the motor was rigged to then stop a few minutes later, coughing and spluttering, so that whoever was on it would be crouched over the motor trying to get it restarted when the bomb went off, thus ensuring it killed whoever was in the boat.
