Negative stereotypes
Are they really stereotypes if it's true?
shareIf you are offended by anything in this movie then you have no business watching any movies ever.
shareI'm not sure what you mean. Stereotypes that are true are still stereotypes.
shareStereotypes that are true are facts, women really are treated like property in Arabic nations.
shareIt's still a stereotype.
shareSo only stereotypes that are false are stereotypes?
shareSeems silly.
sharePretty much, it's not an overgeneralizartion if it is true.
shareStereotypes are an oversimplified portrayal of a person or thing.
The fact that women are property in the Arab world is not an oversimplification, it's a fact.
My point is just about every American film and TV show has stereotypes of some kind in them and anybody who grew up watching them is gonna be used to them. Having that message at the beginning is pandering to people who probably won't be able to stand watching anything ever.
shareI'm not sure if you thought I was replying to you, but my reply was to the original post. I don't disagree with you.
shareAgrabah isn’t a real place so I am a little confused on who is being stereotyped????
shareI really don't like the executives of Disney having that message in front of every old show and movie. They even have it at the front of the Muppet Show when you watch it. I feel like what Disney is really saying is that anything that doesn't have today's PC agenda is immoral and wrong. It's to pander to leftists who can't stand anything that's not accepting of everything.
shareTrouble is the people who they are pandering to are not even the people who should be "offended", who probably are not even offended. They're just some very few people who have appointed themselves the PC Police that decide how the majority of people should think.
shareThey even have that message before "The Jungle Book" even though there are no stereotypes there.
But I can't really see any stereotypes in "Aladdin" either.
It might be for the fact a man in it wants to chop off Jasmine's hand for stealing his apple. Yeah. I know that is still a thing in Arab countries but Disney may think people in more civilized countries would find it offensive.
shareThe only people who care are those looking for things to complain about.

If Disney believes these movies really need disclaimers (and hey - it's their product so they should have the right to say so), then they should just do the right thing and stop releasing any of them in any form.
The fact they are only acknowledging the stereotypical depictions but still collecting money from them is hypocrisy of the highest order.
So you think that nobody should be allowed to watch these movies legally?
It is bad enough that they want to hide "Song of the South", which is really not as bad as some people think either.
