Negative stereotypes

Are they really stereotypes if it's true?

reply

If you are offended by anything in this movie then you have no business watching any movies ever.

reply

Disney+ has a blurb about negative stereotypes before the movie, I'm just saying that there are no stereotypes, since it's all true.

reply

Yeah. I find that stupid myself. They have the same content warning on a lot of shows.

reply

I'm not sure what you mean. Stereotypes that are true are still stereotypes.

reply

Stereotypes that are true are facts, women really are treated like property in Arabic nations.

reply

It's still a stereotype.

reply

So only stereotypes that are false are stereotypes?

reply

Seems silly.

reply

Pretty much, it's not an overgeneralizartion if it is true.

reply

Stereotypes are an oversimplified portrayal of a person or thing.

The fact that women are property in the Arab world is not an oversimplification, it's a fact.

reply

My point is just about every American film and TV show has stereotypes of some kind in them and anybody who grew up watching them is gonna be used to them. Having that message at the beginning is pandering to people who probably won't be able to stand watching anything ever.

reply

I'm not sure if you thought I was replying to you, but my reply was to the original post. I don't disagree with you.

reply

Agrabah isn’t a real place so I am a little confused on who is being stereotyped????

reply

Arabic nations most likely. Don't ask me, Disney is the one who decided there were "stereotypes" in the movie.

reply

Right, 3 decades later, clearly not the same people who actually worked on the film.

reply

I really don't like the executives of Disney having that message in front of every old show and movie. They even have it at the front of the Muppet Show when you watch it. I feel like what Disney is really saying is that anything that doesn't have today's PC agenda is immoral and wrong. It's to pander to leftists who can't stand anything that's not accepting of everything.

reply

Trouble is the people who they are pandering to are not even the people who should be "offended", who probably are not even offended. They're just some very few people who have appointed themselves the PC Police that decide how the majority of people should think.

reply

They even have that message before "The Jungle Book" even though there are no stereotypes there.
But I can't really see any stereotypes in "Aladdin" either.

reply

It might be for the fact a man in it wants to chop off Jasmine's hand for stealing his apple. Yeah. I know that is still a thing in Arab countries but Disney may think people in more civilized countries would find it offensive.

reply

All of the animals in "The Jungle Book" are stereotypes!

reply

No, they're not.
If you think that King Louie is a stereotype, he's based on the white (Italian-American) voice actor Louie Prima.

reply

The only people who care are those looking for things to complain about.

reply

If Disney believes these movies really need disclaimers (and hey - it's their product so they should have the right to say so), then they should just do the right thing and stop releasing any of them in any form.

The fact they are only acknowledging the stereotypical depictions but still collecting money from them is hypocrisy of the highest order.

reply

So you think that nobody should be allowed to watch these movies legally?
It is bad enough that they want to hide "Song of the South", which is really not as bad as some people think either.

That's what you took from my post??
