I believe it is. It's much shorter and much more intense. T2 is obviously great too but it's a bit long and bloated and has a lot James Cameron shmaltz. I am thoroughly entertained by it everytime I see it but I never got why people almost universally preferred it over the first film.
I can see someone preferring the original's tone that at times leans into horror/thriller/slasher more so than T2 but the sequel was just such a massive improvement in terms of cinematic innovation.
I like Terminator 1 just as much as the second. It's more that I am sick of people bashing Terminator 2 and not only that calling anyone who likes it an idiot.
Do not really feel sympathy for you. Considering how you would constantly bash the Raimi Spider-man fans for liking those films over those stupid amazing Spider-man movies back in the imdb days...
How about T3 where John Conner turns into a junkie :D
Yeah, T1 set the universe rules which were promptly violated with each successive sequel. T2 practically claimed Judgement Day happened because John sent a terminator back in time to protect his mother back in T1. (Though, it's been a long time but didn't the guy from the future come back to inseminate Mrs. Conner?
These are all bad movies, which is what makes them so good. Gratuitous gore and violence with a weak story that barely makes any sense. T1 laughs at its own ridiculousness yet T2 takes itself a little more seriously so you get more of that ohh feeling when Arnold kills himself.
