Why would Martin bring Laura sailing without thorough precautions?

I feel like someone as organized and meticulous as Martin would have taken his time to make sure that he would have taken some time to make sure everything with the sailing trip was in smooth order to make sure nothing happens to Laura. Yet, it is just seemed like he and Laura just waltzed on out there without taking any real precautions, especially since Martin just took the sailor's word at heart on the weather being smooth, and not checking it out himself.
Why would someone who has no patience and tolerance for mistakes not prepare thoroughly enough?

I think deep down Martin had an inferiority complex, that’s why he would take his frustrations out on Laura.
When the opportunity arose to go sailing with the doctor, Martin wanted to impress him so didn’t make the necessary precautions.

Martin was more about control than caring for Laura. He knew how she would feel and demanded that she go sailing anyway.
But it worked to her advantage; she got the chance she needed to get away from him.

That's how I saw it as well. His ego would never have let him believe she would EVER try to escape him.
