They couldn't make this film today
The killer is a man who wants to be a woman.
Today, Buffalo Bill would be the misunderstood hero... Uh, heroine... I mean, protagonist.
shareYep and Katherine Martin and Clarice Starling would be the oppressors who don’t understand what Buffalo Bill is going through. Katherine having a problem with being kidnapped and scalped would be seen as evidence of white privilege or something.
shareNo, I think the backlash would be about the same as it was at the time. It generated a lot of protest from certain groups back then, but like now it was only the militants who made a fuss. Measured people realised it was just a movie and not necessarily an anti-trans statement by having a killer who was gender confused.
shareI'm not sure what backlash you are referring too as there was no internet, social medias and cancel culture back in 1991. The Wikipedia article mentions some LGBT groups criticizing the movie but the the only actual source cited by Wikipedia is a New York Times article from 1993.
I think you're right. I watched this movie in theater today and the audience wasn't sure how to react to the transsexual/transvestite parts. Never mind that folks like Ed Gein exist in the real world...
shareI disagree; it could be made today.....though I don't think the line from the book where Hannibal tells Clarice what Buffalo Bill is up to would make the movie just it did not in Silence...
sharesame for Sleepaway Camp.
shareThe bad guy would probably be changed to a straight man (would most likely still be white).
Clarice would be the smartest character and would be able to solve the case without any previous experience, doing a better and more efficient job than others who have decades experience and studies than her.
She would also be bisexual, in a relationship with a young black lesbian.
shareShe’d have no need for Hannibal Lecter as she’d already have all the answers and none of the fears. Just a badass agent the best the bureau has ever seen. Who also twerks.
shareToday Democrats and their lemmings celebrate mental illness.
