How is this a 6.2??

I know this is not an Oscar winner but a 6.2? I was surprised to see this rated so low after all these years. This movie is very entertaining and beautiful on screen. Don't be turned away by the low score, watch it and I guarantee you will love it!

It was a favorite of mine when I was a kid, but I went a few years without watching. Then back 2004 I threw my VHS copy in the VCR and watched again on whim. I fell in love with it all over again, and now even call it my favorite film. I was shocked to learn that it's nearly forgotten nowadays. It even made the Nostalgia Critics list of Top 11 Underrated Nostalgic Classics. I think if if the Disney Channel was still like what it was back in the day (instead of the tween crap it is now) and actually showed some of these great films people would get hooked on them. Mostly because this film didn't do as well as expected in the theaters Disney doesn't treat it very well. It is much loved though, and deserves a much higher rating!

I just conducted a quick experiment, typing in the first low-rent title I could think of. The results have mortally wounded my faith in humanity.

THE ROCKETEER - 6.2

JACKASS: THE MOVIE - 6.4

Now playing: Inhumanoids http://saturdayshowcase.blogspot.com

Great !

Wow, that's sad.
Very, very sad.

This is a wonderful film and it is sad to me that it is so underrated. It's not a 10, but it's at least a 7.7.

I wouldn't worry myself over IMDb ratings too much. I have never met anyone in person who did not enjoy The Rocketeer. The youth today (generally speaking) automatically dislike anything that harkens back to old school film making. If it doesn't have tons of CGI, then they are bored to tears. It's just the simple truth. IMDb is a laughable gauge of opinion, anyhow. It's nothing to be bothered over. Anyone who really cares will post here at some point, and as you can see, there is rarely any bad comments at all about this film. That says more than the lame rating system.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

Hi now you have, also it is was not critical acclaimed and most of them aren't "the youth of today." I just didn't like it, what works for everyone else, just doesn't click with me. If I want to watch an film inspired by the adventures serials of old, I would watch the original 3 Indiana Jones movies. Before you go off on your Transformers rant, just go take a view of my directors I like list and you'll see that I am not like the youth of today(generally) .

Sergeant when you learn to stop abusing the language, people might take you seriously. As for the other comments, I'd have to agree, kids today don't know jack. They're impatient, self righteous and have a sense of entitlement. They appreciate nothing yet demand everything. Another key thing is in the information age, you can't take any rating on line for face value. There are far too many trolls who get their jollies out of being negative little nit wits that down vote everything they can find and they don't even care what it's about. What's funny to me is even bigger stooges from today's generation complain and whine on these boards about ratings being too low and some of these self righteous indignant little nerds will actually refuse to see a movie if the rating isn't high enough, not even considering that trolls have everything to do with a movie's internet rating. Today's kids think the Amazing Spider-Man reboot movie is top notch...never-mind they nothing of the older actors involved (Sally Field, Martin Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, Denis Leary). They think Andrew Garfield is deep. Pathetic.

reply

I still think The Amazing Spider-Man is better than the first and third films in Raimi's trilogy.

reply

Come on now blaming the 'youth of today' for everything is so cliche. I'm 22 and don't fit the stereotype of 'kids today only appreciating CGI, Special effects, and anything that's loud shiny and popular'.

My favourite films of all time are The Philadelphia Story (1940), Labyrinth, Stand By Me, The Lost Boys, and It Happened One Night (1934).

I never watch movies that by and large sacrifice plot/story for action/sfx.

Having said that I do love movies based on comic books, I grew up reading Marvel comics so I relish good adaptations of comics. Comic films like Superman Returns, Man of Steel, Fantastic Four, etc are atrocious. However the Amazing Spider-Man Reboot, Captain America, The Batman trilogy, Avengers, etc are excellent. They're fun films, with good story's/scripts. In fact they remind me of classics like Labyrinth, Neverending Story, etc in that they are well made, fun, fantasy films. Although I think the older films were better at creating atmosphere.

Writing these films off just because they are popular with the youth and use sfx is the same as 'the youth' writing classic films off because they are old, and don't use sfx, or have terrible sfx.

As far as Rocketeer goes, if you look at the rating break down pretty much every age-bracket has the same average rating of around 6. So it would seem generally all ages believe this movie is a 6/10, not just 'the kids of today'.

Personally I haven't seen it yet, but it looks like something I'd enjoy.

Oh please, you're being ridiculous.

I'm 17, if I were to list my favourite movies then among them there would be "Dark City", "Alien", "The Guard", "The Shining", "12 Angry Men", "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly", and "Snatch". I hated "The Amazing Spiderman" and I don't like any Michael Bay crap.

You're calling us self-righteous and impatient when you are the one who obviously hasn't taken the time to actually talk to young people and instead makes ivory tower judgments from afar. I hope you see the hypocrisy in that because it is incredibly obvious from where I'm standing.

The fact you use "kids today" completely unironically would be funny if it didn't portray an unhealthy attitude to a great range of people.

reply

You are right: kids today (even 22-year-olds) shouldn't be called self-righteous and impatient. Self-righteous and arrogant is a much more appropriate description.

reply

If you looked at the ratings, you would see that it's the youth you disparage so much giving this movie the highest scores. Ever considered that the majority of people simply don't think it's particularly good?

reply

I was also surprised by the score, I really liked the movie.

I've learned that it's OK to be flawed - Winona Ryder

It has Jennifer in it - I'm surprised it's not an 11

Please do not make negative comments about a film YOU NEVER SAW. It makes you look stupid.

reply

Agree completely. If this .2 lower than jackass, the movie.....that speaks volumes about the raters.

Great retro movie. Should be closer to 8 than 6.

Beautiful girl, great villain to hiss at. Great hero to root for.

Nazi spies, Howard Hughes and gigantor henchman.

Hubba hubba.

reply

[deleted]

I wondered that myself; I'd expected it to be in the 4-5 range.

When the most interesting character in your movie is the villainous Nazi spy, you've got a problem.

reply

You don't think villains should be the more interesting characters? There's no rule against it, and it has worked well; Robert Mitchum in The Night of the Hunter comes to mind, or Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction, or;

Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, The Green Goblin, The Joker, Lex Luthor, Clarence Boddicker, Dracula, Shredder, Skeletor, Big Boy Caprice, Queen Bavmordia, Major Toht, Mola Ram, and most of the guys Alan Rickman played at the beginning of his film career. That's not even counting Bond villains.

Or are you saying because the character's a Nazi spy, he shouldn't be interesting?

I gave it a 10 for entertainment value, the same as Jurassic Park and Back to the Future. Great soundtrack, good action, great characters, great effects, great 1930's atmosphere, fun story, a righteous fight against evil, and enough humor too.

"It's the flying man!"
"It's the Rocketeer!"

I agree, this movie is a 9 or 10 in my book. It has everything you could want in an action adventure. A boyish hero daredevil with a heart of gold, his brilliant fatherly sidekick, beautiful plucky girlfriend who can take care of herself, slimy villains that you love to hate, a gizmo every kid would love to have and the world hanging in the balance, not to mention all those classic planes, costumes, sets and songs. I loved it in 1991 and it's a movie I've come back to again and again. I wish they made them like this today. Too bad my dvd copy is not widescreen and has no special features other than the trailer, but sadly Disney is not going to spend money on this movie, that got crushed at the box office by T2 and panned by some overly jaded critics who just didn't seem to get it.
