John Lithgow the ultimate bad guy

I'm sure if John was still playing roles like the one he has in this movie, he would surely play the hell out of the role. Too bad he went on to make stupid shows like 3rd Rock From The Sun.

Lithgow was on a roll with RICOCHET, RAISING CAIN & CLIFFHANGER - 3 great villian roles...in 3 great movies. :)

I agree 100%, i've always liked John Lithgow in pretty much anything he does, but when he goes bad he goes REALLY bad! His role as Earl Talbet Blake in Ricochet remains, IMO anyway, his best performance, he just seeths with burning violence and hatred and is dead set on getting his vengeance on Styles.

That scene where he's shown on the video tape bending down beside Nick's daughters bed as she sleeps and pulls out that axe, raises his arm up and just when you think he's about to do the unthinkable, he turns the camera off leaving Styles to use his imagination on what he might have done to his little girl...SICK LOL!

I love him in this!

Lithgow's best villain role was in Blow Out

reply

By far, yes. He's way better in Blow Out than in this.

Hey, I liked that show a lot. Shows how he is so good at doing funny stuff and playing the villian. His sheer goofiness that works so well for comedy seems to rub off effectively in his evil roles, oddly enough.

I love it when he says to the parole board guy how hes going to stop by his house to f_ck his wife, his daughter, maybe his dog? The way he says it, its so out of place sounding; he doesn't sound like the typical "tough guy", something I love about his villian roles!

I know this is an old post, but he played the bad guy in Season 4 of Dexter and he was brilliant!

I´m agree with almost everything, except the comment about3rd Rock From the Sun, he is great in that show!

check out last season (dvd out soon)...DEXTER......his Arthur Miller character is meaner and more diabolical than he is in this movie...

Lithgow is so great at playing evil roles in. in this movie, raising Cain cliffhanger and Dexter he really is over the top bad

reply

I agree. Lithgow made for a marvelously cruel, cunning, and formidable villain as ruthless psycho Blake. I loved the deliciously wicked relish Lithgow brings to the part.

Richochet is a hoot!Lithgow chewing the scenery and the whole film should be sectioned under the mental health act!
Lithgow is brilliant we all do things for rent money but his line in cliffhanger
'get him to a hospital-fast' while chucking a wounded man out of a plane is sheer genius.

It's especially fun to watch after 3rd Rock, Lithgow is really an awesome actor.

He topped himself again and upped his sinister side considerably in last season of Dexter, he was utterly brilliant and shockingly frightening.

He had a nice repertoire playing an assorted villains, creeps, and weirdos, beginning with Obsession (1976). His strangest role must have been the mad scientist in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984). From these roles, it's apparent that he is an intense and committed character actor. He never broke character (even in laughable or ridiculous roles)and was not afraid to take chances.

I just wish that he had more opportunities in tackling serious dramatic roles like The Manhattan Project (1986) instead of being typecast in one villain role after another.
