Babs Ruined the Story
That's pretty much it. The book is amazing. Streisand ruined it. Someone less self absorbed should have made this into a movie. Re-do!!!
(P.S. Idina Menzel as Lowenstein.... huh? huh?)

Just my $0.02...I agree she and others did ruin the movie. I believe she was one if the producers and the director, she cannot take all of the blame but a large portion of it. The problem with the movie simply was it focused too much on Tom and Dr. Lowenstein. I was born and raised in the Carolinas and like most southerners revere Pat Conroy. I remember hearing the news in the '89 or '90 that "Prince of Tides" was being made into a movie and was eagerly anticipating the release. Sadly, I walked out of the theater very disappointed.
I read the book in 1988 while I was in graduate school. I literally could not put it down. I was drawn in and completely mesmerized. I was hoping to feel the same way about the movie. I would equate it to a decent "Lifetime" movie.
I'm not a BS hater by any means...but I was extremely disappointed with the film.
Obviously Streisand had her own role beefed up at the sacrifice of the most compelling parts of the book. Luke was my favorite character and I thought pretty instrumental to the story as a whole. But he got completely left out.
I would love to see this film made again with an emphasis on the family dynamics...because that's what made the book so incredible.
Not the silly love story!
Read the book, several years after seeing the film. The novel is a sprawling, yet intimate epic and for the sake of the run time, it was condensed into the film she wanted.......which largely focused on her character's romantic\relationship with Wingo. Streisand did a good, if not fine job with the screenplay she worked from and if it weren't for her narcissism and feminine sensibilities, in making the film as focused on her character and wanting it so romanticized, it could have been better. The last part of the film, comes over a little self-centred and thin.
shareI haven't read the book, but I wondered why her troubles were front and center.
