The Prince of Tides the Book

For someone who has read the book, it is worth reading?? I have seen the movie and have loved it but will the book ruin it and/or be predictable since I have seen the movie??

Yes - read the book!!! It will not be quite the same now that you've seen the movie but as usual, the book provides a much more detailed and mesmerizing account of the Wingo family story. And Pat Conroy has a lyrical writing style that shouldn't be missed!

There's a hilarious scene in the book that I don't think made it into the movie (it's been years since I watched it). After the hateful Mr. Newbury slapped young Tom across the face and threatened him for beating up his son (who had called the Wingo family white trash), Luke devised a scheme to get even. While the Newburys were away, a dead loggerhead turtle was smuggled into their house and tucked into bed in the master bedroom. When the family returned some weeks later, you can imagine what the house smelled like.

It did show a flashback of Mr. Newbury slapping Tom in the film; done, I'm sure, to establish the underpinnings of their relationship. But that is all. No mention of Mrs. Newbury and her vindictiveness towards the Wingo family, nor was there any mention of the Wingo grandparents. Too bad, as they were two of the most colorful characters in the book.
