Surely it has been mentioned before but I just saw it for the first time and man, they sure should've ended it in the desert.
It's not like I cared about bodi or anything. He was a douche.
But seeing him die or take jail time really didn't feel very satisfying. It just felt forced. So that whole part came across as unnecessary.
The bitter sweet endings are the best and the desert ending would've been a prime example of that.

But the ending we got felt just like Speed.
Creating a whole new setup, a mini story if you will, ONLY to tell the dumb audience that crime doesn't pay off.

It's a good movie but they could've made the ending less cheesy.

I did too. It was very emotional and intense, in a cheesy way,

The film was really about the relationship between the two lead characters, how their feelings towards each other swing back and forth from love to rivalry to love to hate and back again. In the final scene, we see that the pendulum of Johnny's feelings have swung towards extreme, obsessive, self-destructive hatred, and as they talk we see the pendulum swing back in the direction of love. Not a all the way, just a little, not to the point of forgiveness for crimes or anything, but enough that we see Johnny do something merciful, and we know he's going to be okay after this. Now of course an emotional confrontation could have taken place in any setting, but that one concession had to take place where it did.

Cut it out? How about... you do it. ;)

Now I get where those who share your view are coming from (to an extent), but I myself find the endings to Point Break & Speed satisfying. Both are memorable & cool and without them I feel these films would have felt…. incomplete. Crime doesn’t pay? Funny, some feel Bodhi actually got an undeserved happy ending (survived or not, he went out his way). And that train sequence in Speed is particularly killer and its outcome is earned. In fact, I’d say it’s one of the best endings to an action film.

Call ‘em cheesy all you want but they’re well-executed endings. At any rate, they both served the film’s story and I’m glad we have them.

kicke_blueblack Nah, it needed a proper climax, and the desert ending would've been very anti-climactic. You can't end an action film like this with an ending like that, it just doesn't work (unless there's a sequel planned). Also, what was cheesy about the ending?

The only thing "cheesy" about the ending was Keanu pulling a Dirty Harry and tossing his badge. I mean it makes sense but it was such a cliche even back then. Otherwise I agree, the movie needed closure and the ending not only gives us that but also ties in the 50 year storm mentioned earlier in the movie.

thats not surprising as the Storm was only mentioned earlier as "foreshadowing" as they now call it.

and yes , the badge tossing was cheesy.
