mind numbingly dull

One of those dreaded films that tries so hard to be art-house chic yet never reaches its mark. I liked the hook of the film -- all stories take place at the same time on the same night in different parts of the world -- and thought the explanation of this was well executed but the stories all left me cold. The chapter that takes place in Helsinki had the most promise although it never lived up to its potential. Of the remaining 4 chapters, none were written well enough or acted well enough to make me care what what happened to the characters or their night. The chapter with Roberto Benigni was especially annoying and crass. He's such a one-trick pony and I've never liked the only one he does well.

It's too bad that such a great initial idea could turn out to be so dull. Perhaps the writer/director could work harder on character development rather than worrying about the hipness factor of this film.

This film wasn't "arthouse" at all. It was a mainstream film connected by some cab drivers and conversations. It just has an interesting structure and premise, but that's barely enough to sustain it for 2 hours.

All I know is, sitting in my man-cave, watching this movie on my DVR and drinking coffee, I suddenly had to laugh so hard, the coffee came out of not only my mouth, but my nose too. This happened while watching the "Rome" piece. I also laughed just as hard during the "New York" piece, but thank God I wasn't drinking anything at the time. I did call a friend and tell her that this was one movie she just had to see!

"Art-house chic"? LOL. Musta been a superhuman effort to try and spot some traces of pretention here.

I think that most of Jarmusch's films are mind-numbingly dull, with the exception of this one and Coffee and Cigarettes. You wanna talk mind-numbingly dull, go watch Stranger Than Paradise. That movie had me bored outta my goddamned mind. The ending was the only really funny part of that film. Other than that, the low register in which the characters speak, drab black and white scenery, and the lack of any real action of any kind really just killed me. This film is by far my favorite of his films. There's such humanity displayed, and I think that Roberto Begnini's bit was the best. I mean, there's not much plot there, but the interactions between the characters was good enough for me.

Funny, that's why I enjoyed Stranger Than Paradise so much too.
