Jim Garrison's homophobia triggered his crusade
He first based his "case" on a premise that Oswald, Clay and Ferrie were a gay-BDSM ring who plotted the assassination as an act of "thrill-killing." This fixation was partly modelled after the famous 1920's Leopold and Loeb case. It was only after the "revision" of his initial theory that he started seeing the trio as CIA agents, turning his case into a government-wide conspiracy.
