Has anyone ever eaten at the Whistle Stop Cafe??

The food is as good as it looks in the movie. It used to be a restaurant, but after the movie came out, it is kind of cafeteria-style now with different foods served on different days of the week. But whenever you go, the fried chicken is the best I ever had and the Fried Green Tomatoes, hmmmm, my mouth waters just writing about it. It's located in Irondale, AL, outside Birmingham. My daughter used to live there and everytime I would visit, the next day you could find me there.

Southern Food is theeeeeeeeeeeeee best.

Yep, we eat there several times a year since I only live about 30 miles from it, but the one I eat at is the actual location in the movie located in Juliette, Ga. It's been open as the Whistle Stop since the movie was made. It still looks pretty much like it did in the movie both inside and out. The other buildings on the street are souvenir shops and such. The street is paved but was covered with dirt for the movie. Trains still use the track next to the cafe and blow their horns when passing by which is neat. I always get the Bennetts barbecue and the fried green tomatoes. Secrets in the sauce!

I ate there last December while on a road trip. It was pretty good but I didn't actually like the fried green tomatoes there. They were a little bland.

@jimmylh - There's a menu item called "Bennetts Barbecue"?
I do want to stop there, and plan on it next time I'm passing through GA, which is very rare. Still, I have to add that to my list of stops.

I ate there a couple of years ago - would like to go back.

I was a little disappointed with the barbecue. All it consisted of was a pulled pork sandwich with barbecue sauce on the side. "Real" barbecue is not made this way.

I also had the fried green tomatoes. They were good, although a little bland.

I guess you couldn't mess up a bag of chips, although when you're in the south, you have to emphasize UNsweet tea (with the emphasis on UN) - otherwise you'll get semi-sweet tea, which in their opinion IS unsweet tea.

All this at a touristy price of $19.06 (I still have the receipt - it's the only souvenir I could afford after paying the lunch tab).

I grew up less than an hour's drive from Juliette, GA. My dad and I visited the cafe several times after the movie came out and shopped at the little antique stores that were there. I haven't been in many years since my Dad died and I don't go "home" as often. I just watched the movie again. And for the record, I do think Ninny and Idgy were the same person. ;-)

Actually, I have never eaten there but we did buy the recipe book and the pot roast recipe is the BEST recipe hands down. I know that isn't what you asked but since I live a little too far away to visit there I just pretend when I used the cookbook!

I plan on going to visit the Juliette location this year. I think it would be cool to eat at the movie site's location.

We eat at the real cafe in Irondale every year or so. The fried green tomatoes there are delicious but taste a bit different than the ones cooked with cornmeal.

I would love to go there if I ever have the opportunity to go to America.
