Has anyone here ever had Fried Green Tomatoes???

I mean the food. Really. I haven't noticed this discussion on here, but if it is, sorry.

But honestly, I've never tried them and am a little afraid to. Isn't that silly? So my question is, has anyone here eaten fried green tomatoes? If so, what are they like? Do they have some kind of accompaniment like ranch dressing or some other dipping thing to go with them?

Just curious.

I've not tried fried green tomatoes (YET!), but it's not through choice. I travel to the southeast quite a bit (within spitting distance of the film's location, as a matter of fact) but I'm usually too tired by that time to think about fried green tomatoes or any other food. But I have eaten fried cucumbers coated with cornmeal. If there's any similarity in taste, I can't wait for tomato season.

I've from south Alabama,so I've had them my whole life.I like them with ranch dressing, but I'm not really crazy about them, but I've never been a big fan of southern food I guess.

Oh...Now I want some!! We only use flour with some salt and pepper in it. No eggs and no cornmeal. They are SO yummy!!! But, they take forever, at least the first batch when the skillet/oil isn't really really hot. Also, Bob Evans restaurant had them on the menu a while back; they were much prettier than mine but I like mine much better. I think they were served with that orange-colored sauce/dip or ranch dressing.

-Dad, who's that?
-Oh, that? One of my patients. He's...sick.
-Will he live?
-It's looking grim.

My husband is from Alabama (we also lived there for about 10 years) and his grandmother would make fried green tomatoes every Sunday, or whenever I asked her to. They are so delicious. She served them with a spicy sauce that was similar to tartar sauce. She taught me how to cook all of her favorite dishes.

My mom used to make them all the time when I was a kid. She hasn't made them anytime recently. But they're quite good and a little hard to describe. And we didn't use a dipping sauce for them either.

Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?

reply

Mom made them when I was kid. Actually red tomatoes or not quite ripe red. Then dipped in a little bread crumbs and fried. But obvious not as thick or crisp as the ones in the movie. Nevertheless, I enjoyed them and still bring me memories of my mother who learned to cook them from her mother.

Fried green tomatoes are SCRUMPTIOUS, and so easy to make. You don't have to come south to eat them. I always look forward to late spring/early summer because really that's the best time to eat them, fresh out of a garden, picked early off the vine. I usually do a flour/cornmeal mix and I do dip them in egg before frying them in the skillet. I don't do any sauce with it but it is important to salt them when they come off the skillet.

It's been years since I read the book Fried Green Tomatoes, but if I remember correctly there is a recipe for them at the back of the book.

Had them at a restaurant here in Cleveland about a year or two ago-they really are great-didn't think I would like them, but of course had to try. So good.

I made them many years ago, after seeing this movie. Had to use our own tomatoes, as i've never seen them in stores. I fry up eggplant pretty much the same way, but of course the taste is different. Now I have the craving to make some more, but they are so out of season in Colorado.

In Mexico we have our own green tomatoes (never get red) and the only way we use them is for salsas. After the movie, we were naturally curious and we tried, but since we don't have okra either and the only thing we deep fry is stuffed poblano peppers, we had to do some research. Fried mexican green tomatoes are very good indeed! Never tried the originals, but I guess is a acquired taste.

OMG I will grow tomatoes just so I can get some green ones to fry. They are so good. Its a southern thing.
