Has anyone here ever had Fried Green Tomatoes???

I mean the food. Really. I haven't noticed this discussion on here, but if it is, sorry.

But honestly, I've never tried them and am a little afraid to. Isn't that silly? So my question is, has anyone here eaten fried green tomatoes? If so, what are they like? Do they have some kind of accompaniment like ranch dressing or some other dipping thing to go with them?

Just curious.

Oh, my, yes, and they are delicious. I don't know where you all live, but here in the metro Atlanta area there are many restaurants that serve them, including one called "Folks." The tomatoes are hot and crisp and are served with a remoulade sauce (kind of a spicy mayonnaise) for dipping, although I suppose you could dip them in whatever you prefer--ranch would be good. I brought some home once for my 7-year-old niece, and her grandmother, not realizing they were for the child, ate them herself. Believe me, my niece was not happy. She still mentions it to this day!

Anyway, find yourself a good, simple recipe on the internet and cook some. You won't be sorry!

They are awesome! I live in West Tennessee, and my grandmother makes them from time to time. She coats them with cornmeal. YUM!

I am visiting hot springs nc this year. Is this south enough for fried green toms? I'd be really disapointed if I couldn't get any.

i live on the mississippi gulf coast and i have to say - fried green tomatoes are DELICIOUS. i highly recommend you trying some anytime you have the chance :)

Fried Green Tomatoes have a tart flavor and I love them. Vaguely similar to fried eggplant. If you want to try them, choose tomatoes that are just barely on the edge of turning yellow - still green, but not rock hard. I like them with just salt and pepper, but many people like the dipping sauces, like ranch.

That sounds delicious...I might try to learn how to cook some. I haven't had dinner yet, so I guess now's as good a time as any!

Oh, love 'em. I'm waiting for my Mom's tomatoes to get big enough to pick some green ones so I can fix a mess of them.

I've had them at least twice, and neither time was in the south. The first time was when my college cafeteria had them, not long after the movie came out. The second time was at a restaurant in Kalamazoo, Michigan, served with a corn salsa.

I'd have to watch the movie again, but I seem to recall the movie plays it out as if they invented the dish at that cafe.

Here's a page with detailed findings on the surprising probable origin. (It's not southern!) http://www.robertfmoss.com/2007/08/fried-green-tomato-swindle.html

Clothes-Off, what an interesting article, thank you for posting it :)

I'm from London, UK and from what I can see, it's impossible to buy green tomatoes :( I'd have to go to a farm far away to see if they have any unripe ones. I can't grow my own because I don't have a garden, and the sunlight's terrible anyway.

Have any British people here had any luck finding green tomatoes? I really wish I could make my own using Fannie Flagg's recipe.

I've had them here in California, they seem to be on the menus in the fall, is that tomato season? I can never find them in the springtime. I'll have to ask my dad, he grows tomatoes in the garden from time to time. And yes, some of the ripe tomatoes are green that he grows and some are yellow, so I wonder, are the fried green tomatoes I've had at restuarants ripe green tomatoes because the ones my dad grows are ripe but they're green in color? I really like the yellow tomatoes actually. I've only seen them at farmers markets, never at the stores. My mom fries red tomatoes but I never seen her fry the green ones.

Fried olives and pickles are good too. Gosh I just really like fried veggies of any kind. I went to this thai place once and they had a fried veggie plate of about 15 different veggies, like squash, okra, and peppers and yep, tomatoes. I had the same thing when I was in tokyo so I think frying stuff is something everyone does, because it makes food taste so much better when you fry it. I went to a facny pants liberal arts school and I was visiting my friend at a neighboring fancy pants school and they had kosher night and there was fried cheese and fried Ice cream.... oh boy. I've had fried ice cream at a bunch of places, like chinese restuarants or boba tea shops. Oh boy.

But back to tomatoes, they're on menus in the fall, so I'm looking forward to eating some, I've missed my fgt. I usually like it when they serve it when corn salsa, one place I went to served it with corn and green tomato salsa which I thought was silly but they stopped serving it :( and I've had it with spicy mayo and just plain or with a side of butter, which I'm sure will kill me someday. Mostly I see it with some kind of salsa. yum.

Yes, they are delicious! Very easy to make. Thinly slice a green tomato. Dip the slices in beaten egg, then coat with corn meal. Place in a skillet and fry until crispy. I've never eaten them with an accompaniment, they are wonderful just as they are.

Fried Green tomatoes are to most southerners heaven on a plate! It varies from state to state. But the best I have ever had are in Huntsville, Texas at the Farmhouse Cafe. Served with the house sauce. "The secrets in the sauce" Its hard to find Green tomatoes but you usually can find at Farmer's markets at least here in East Texas. But a lot of people grow them themselves or know someone who does. Its hard to make the first couple of times but it very good. Like I said, Heaven on a plate! Haha! Good Luck finding some!

They are yummy and easy to fix! We have them every summer. Green tomatos are firm and easy to cut and not fall all apart like a ripe tomato. You have to cut them in thin slices, then I just dip them in water and roll in a mixture of cornmeal with a dash of salt and pepper. Fry in a shallow pan, make sure your oil is good and hot when you drop the slices in. We don't use any sauces to dip it in, they are delicious by theirselves. I have 6 kids and they all love them. We also fry summer squash the same way and the kids love it too! BTW we are in southern Ohio and Captain D's here has Fried Green Tomatos on their menu!

I never thought of doing it with squash--I'm sure that would be good too. BTW, please don't be offended, but it's "themselves" not "theirselves." Not trying to be a smart aleck, just thought you'd want to know.

I just got the DVD of FGT last week and there is a section in the bonus materials called "Sipseys' recipes." I tried their recipe for fried green tomatoes and they were TERRIBLE! My Grandmother's 100 year-old recipe is still the best.

I wouldn't eat a ripe (red) tomato on a bet but I like fried green ones just fine!

My Kentuckian mother's recipe had her dipping them in flour,s&p,then frying up in Crisco.
They have a tangy taste to them-nothing like a red tomato.

I think what they call Fried Green Tomatoes in Mexican cooking are actually tomatillos. They look like green tomatoes when ripe but are actually a different plant altogether - the latin name is Physalis philadelphica and they are a member of the nightshade family (though not deadly luckily!)and related to the cape gooseberry. I have grown them from seed for the first time this year and they grow fantastically well outdoors in the British climate so you don't need to be in the subtropics. They are covered in a little husk like the cape gooseberry and underneath are shiny, green and a little bit sticky, which you wash off with warm water. You can roast, boil or (of course)fry them and they make great authentic salsa verde. They also freeze well which is useful because you will have more than you know what to do with come September! If you in are in the UK, you can buy the seed from Suttons as part of their James Wong collection.
