Is now the right time to redo this movie?

Most of us love the movie and the book, or we would not be on this board. My question is simple. Now that things have changed in society, should this movie be remade and actually follow the book? No matter what your answer, why and why not, and please add if you loved the book or the movie more. Thank you ahead of time.

I hope they never remake it. I can't think of a single remake that improved on the original. They most likely wouldn't get any closer to the book anyway, and they would choke the cast with terrible actors there only for celeb factor.

For argument sake though, there's not much more in the book that's explicit so a remake wouldn't do anything any different, imo.

I don't think the movie should be redone, because they got the actresses right the first time.
Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker ARE Idgie and Ruth - at least to me.
I watched the movie years ago, and I loved it. I'm just reading the novel now, and I love it as much as I loved the movie.

Not all that much has changed in society since this film was made. What would be different? Some hip hop, mention of our first African American President, and a mention of 9/11 and the ensuing, pointless wars in the present scenes? Perhaps Ninny's house would be gone because of the stock market that tanked? The present day scenes could use 2/3 overweight/obese people in them?

I'm joking, of course, but not really all that much has changed for that alone to necessitate a remake. Perhaps if it was 50 years later.

Unfortunately, if they do remake the film, they will probably ruin it, even if they try to make it more like the novel.

Pretty much the bottom line is, if you have a movie that is very good, or even great, like this film is, then don't remake it, because it almost always turns out terribly, and in a way, is sort of disrespectful to the original filmmaker. If you have a movie that is just so so or not very good, but the original idea was good, give it a try.

They did the miniseries of the book "The Shining", but it was awful. The original film varied from the book, quite a bit in some places, but it was fantastic and a classic.

"A Nightmare On Elm Street" is a perfect example. The original was great. The remake was a piece of garbage. (I'm not trying to stick to horror movies, I'm just referencing originals and the remakes that I have seen)

"Carrie" is another good example. The original was great, if not dated today. The remake was awful, and the second remake that is coming out later this year will almost assuredly be awful as well.

"Scarface" worked, but they changed quite a bit of that.

NO. This movie should never be remade.

Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?

I wouldn't watch a remake.

What if they made a musical?

That might be fun.

Hey, at least these days we have "Honey Boo Boo". It's a Southern family and even filmed near a railroad. Sans cannibalism... so far anyway.

reply

No. I want to see more original works produced.

Na, they shouldn't remake it. Personally, I think that the love story comes across. I just don't see them doing it better than the movie we already have.
