Not all that much has changed in society since this film was made. What would be different? Some hip hop, mention of our first African American President, and a mention of 9/11 and the ensuing, pointless wars in the present scenes? Perhaps Ninny's house would be gone because of the stock market that tanked? The present day scenes could use 2/3 overweight/obese people in them?
I'm joking, of course, but not really all that much has changed for that alone to necessitate a remake. Perhaps if it was 50 years later.
Unfortunately, if they do remake the film, they will probably ruin it, even if they try to make it more like the novel.
Pretty much the bottom line is, if you have a movie that is very good, or even great, like this film is, then don't remake it, because it almost always turns out terribly, and in a way, is sort of disrespectful to the original filmmaker. If you have a movie that is just so so or not very good, but the original idea was good, give it a try.
They did the miniseries of the book "The Shining", but it was awful. The original film varied from the book, quite a bit in some places, but it was fantastic and a classic.
"A Nightmare On Elm Street" is a perfect example. The original was great. The remake was a piece of garbage. (I'm not trying to stick to horror movies, I'm just referencing originals and the remakes that I have seen)
"Carrie" is another good example. The original was great, if not dated today. The remake was awful, and the second remake that is coming out later this year will almost assuredly be awful as well.
"Scarface" worked, but they changed quite a bit of that.
