Did he?
Close to the end when Birdlace ripped up Roses address, why did he do that i thought he liked her so why did he do that?

shareMy take on it was that he was always aware of the *beep* he was giving into by just following his friends and he was fully conscious of the impact Rose left on him, especially after that night, but going off to war was an easy way out. It allowed him to block reality, just like he was used to.
The night with her showed us a glimpse of the real Birdlace but his other side was more dominant and overshadowed it at the smallest opportunity. But war ended up being a rude awakening for him and with all his friends dying, it forced him to face reality. Face to face with the truth, his life drifted in the direction of Rose again.
^I agree with this. I think he was a different guy when he was with his friends. He showed his real side to Rose but once he's back with his friends, he goes back to acting like an ass.

Metaphor. He effed her and tossed her away. These kids went to war, got effed and their country tossed them away. Only the entire point of the movie.
sharei was so annoyed he threw it away cause i feel like he did it cause of his friends but then the fact he threw it away kept me glued so badly. i was practically hanging off of the edge of my seat DYING for him to see her again or remember her address or something. i just didn't want the film to end until we had seen what happened with them so now i've gotten to the end of the movie i appreciate the letter being thrown away because it made me love the ending even more than i would have. it made me an emotional wreck hahaha!
