kinda like Wayne's World?

Is it me, or are Bill and Ted kinda like the also rock-obsessed Wayne and Garth? Does anyone know if Bill and Ted came first or the SNL skits of Wayne's World?

I would say that Bill and Ted would have been around before Wayne and Garth, but it's really hard to tell.

The first Bill and Ted movie was released in 1989, which was the same year Mike Myers first appeared on SNL. On the other hand, there is no information anywhere where I can find that says when the first Wayne's World sketch was aired.

Like I said to the OP, the writers themselves played the characters in improve classes they took years before they made the movie. But Excellent Adventure was actually released in theaters one day before the first Waynes World sketch on SNL.

Specifically: The first "Wayne's World" sketch appeared in the 13th Saturday Night Live episode of 1988.(actually 1989, but this season began in 1988, Mike didn't join the cast until episode 10, which was early 1989).

That episode aired on February 18th. One day after Bill and Ted hit theaters.

According to the "Excellent Collection", the film was supposed to be released in 87. It's also stated in the trivia section. So whether or not that helps, correct me if I'm wrong, I believe the idea started with Bill and Ted.

In the book Live from New York, a chronicle of the history of SNL, Dana Carvey is quoted as saying, "I thought, aren't we just doing 'Bill & Ted?'" when he's reminiscing about his role in the first "Wayne's World" sketch. So I'm pretty sure Bill & Ted came first, Wayne & Garth second. And I still don't get how W&G became more popular than B&T. (Not that I hate W&G, but B&T broke the ground, and W&G built on top of it.)

well the character of Wayne is something Meyers was doing as far back as the early to mid 80s before he was even on SNL. Muchmusic in Canada used to have him appear in character for little skits and stuff with one of their VJs, in fact that VJ made an album back then and Wayne appears in his video. you can actually still catch the video to this day on the MuchRetro channel every now and then.

also i think B & T are just kind of idiots, whereas wayne and garth aren't that stupid. it's almost painful to watch b & t for longer than 30 mins at a time for me. it's like watching beavis & butthead

Bill and Ted might be dumb, but they're also endearing characters who you want to succeed. Butthead is a jerk who cares nothing for anyone but himself. Beavis is a nice guy who too easily influenced.

They are both much smarter than either Wayne or Garth.

Bill and Ted came from an improve bit that the creators of the movie used to do. Not to mention the first movie predates Mike Myers first appearance on SNL.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was released in February 1989 and Mikes first appearance on SNL was January 21st 1989. Plus, the first Waynes World sketch wasn't aired until February 18th 1989.

So unless the writers of this movie actually had access to a time machine, there is absolutely no way Bill and Ted are at all based on Wayne and Garth. It's actually unlikely there is any relation between the two at all considering the Waynes World sketch aired the day after Bill and Ted was released.

As I recall, the first film was written in 1986, and filmed in 87, it just took until 1989 for them to find a distributor
