It is interesting that he didn't even travel with a simple flintlock pistol. But Maurice was known for being absent-minded. That was one reason he got lost. That, and the signs on the road were messed-up from neglect and weathering.

I don't think he could have afforded a musket like Gaston had, considering guns like that were expensive in the 18th century, but yeah, it doesn't make much sense that he'd go traveling without something to protect himself. I'm guessing he was making a bad assumption that he'd make it to the fair in just one or two days, and didn't think ahead about the dangers of the woods. I mean, you saw how idyllic the roads and fields were when he first left the house. He must have thought it would be like that all the way to where the fair was being held.

Either way, it was all set up so that he would end up lost in the woods and being forced to go into the Beast's castle for help.

There wasn't a gun back then that could have killed all those wolves. You'd need a machine gun to take them all out.

Are we sure everyone would've carried a gun back then when travelling? His intention was to follow the main road anyway, not to wander off in the treacherous woods. But I don't think he even had enough money to buy a gun as he put all his time and effort in inventing. He also looked like a softie who might have had no interest in violent weapons.
