Have you ever thought to yourself...

That maybe the reason you don't like the new kids' shows on Nickelodeon as opposed to the ones you enjoyed in the 90s is because you're no longer a kid? Perhaps you're looking for more sophisticated/mature television these days?

Sure, you liked Doug when you were a kid, who didn't? The reason you STILL like Doug is because you have fond memories of it from your childhood. It's nostalgia. The reason you DON'T like new cartoons is because they aren't meant for you, they're meant for children.

Don't get me wrong, I still watch cartoons and I'm well into my freshman year of college, but I also understand why new cartoons don't seem as great as the ones I liked in the 90s.

Yeah i'd say that's true, and kids nowadays probably wouldn't like Doug...

I always think about this but I convince myself I'm not being biased because I'm still able to accept a few new animated shows. . .well, only Avatar really and I wouldn't consider myself a "fan". . .

I'm a freshman in college and I still watch cartoons it's no big deal, my sense of humor has matured over the years, what I liked about Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network in the early days was that they had programming that almost everyone could enjoy and alot of them had hidden adult jokes that children wouldn't get, they could get away with more violence back in the day, and occasionally they could say words like damn and crap. Todays programming is terrible compared to the 90's they can't really get away with much most of the shows deal with hyperactive children and characters and the adults are usually idiots, most of the violence is off screen, and they can't say those words anymore, I don't watch most of the shows on those networks anymore because many of them are too childish.

well i reckon i'm fairly unbiased and heres why... i was born in 1991 (the same year doug came out) but didn't watch much tv until 2001 when i got my own tv and could watch whatever i wanted. apart from a few exceptions like visiting my grandparents who had a color set in 2000 and watching the few shows i was allowed to such as hey arnold!. When i got my own set i began watching a lot of tv. in australia where i live most shows are a year or so behind those in america so i guess i would have seen most tv from 2000 onwards (the first saturday disney cartoons i saw were ones like pepper ann and sabrina:the animated series and the house of mouse). recently i've been watching some old nick and disney shows on youtube. apart from that i've seen reruns of older shows like the original spiderman series and some old sitcoms from the 70s. so my opinion is that tv went downhill, taking nick with it, around 2000. it seems with the net and reality tv tv became less powerful and less important and since then its become less good quality and entertaining as well. animation especially because of quicker easier cgi techniques which means whilst if they put the same effort they put into cell cartoons it would look awesome they don't and it looks retarded

I agree with the topic creator. I'm an 18yo college student and I stopped watching TV about a year ago, except for my tapes of childhood shows, like the original Nicktoons. I know the 80s-90s had a lot of good shows, but people whine too much about how today's shows don't appeal to them. They really need to get some lives if they feel the need to complain about what the kids of today like.

Aw, you wanted the movie to have a happy ending? Too bad!

Our point is that they should have at least left some of our cartoons on the channel or given us our very own channel devoted to the old cartoons. They took off every single one of the old cartoons and replaced them with shows made for teens. What happened to all the childrens shows?

Your parents don't have their own channel.
You guys who grew up in the 80's and 90's who worshipped these shows aren't any different from the kids who grew up in the 50's and watched these shows.

These shows were actually GOOD. Thats what we mean. You won't see anything like Hey Arnold or Doug ever again. Some of those episodes on Hey Arnold were so moving, like the one where Arnold tries to find Mr. Hyunh's long lost daughter for Christmas and miraculously she shows up thanks to Helga. And the Parents Day/Journal episodes.

Oh and BTW my parents enjoyed some of the shows we kids watched. My dad always laughed his tail off at Rocko and Angry Beavers. And my mom would laugh hysterically at All That. And she watched Alex Mack with my older sister. And we all would watch Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Doug, etc. So that says something. And like I said in a previous post, a lot of kids my age and older/younger (I'm 21) appreciate what our parents watched. I love the Flintstones and Scooby Doo and all that stuff. And also the Three Stooges, which was even before my parents time. I know a few kids my age who love them.

I think it's because Doug was very realistic for a cartoon. A lot of his thoughts and fears on life were the same thoughts and fears we had as kids while watching. Whether it came to girls, or grades or bullies, just about everyone could relate to Doug in one way or another. The animation may have been a little weird and some of the characters were a little crazy, but all in all it was a fairly realistic cartoon when it came to growing up.

Cartoons (and tv for that matter) are all about instant gratification these days. When I was a kid, I hardly laughed at Doug at all. I just watched it and loved it as one of my favorite shows. I stopped watching Nickelodean when I got to Jr High and then I watched some Spongebob when I became a senior in high school. I'll be the first to admit that Spongebob is way funnier than Doug, but not half the cartoon Doug was.

Complete BS. I showed me niece who is 10 some of the early Nick shows and even she agreed that it was better than the stuff they have on Nick now. I like cartoons but I like my cartoons to be smart not mindless. Cartoon Network has had a lot of smart cartoons and my focus has switched over to their network as of late. Does Nick even show cartoons anymore besides their trusted (and completely stupid) Spongebob? But even CN has gotten rid of all their good shows and only show complete crap these days.

I agree with Navaeh. There are a lot of people my age and a older that like music and TV shows that our parents and grandparents all watched and listened to, myself included and I think it's a lot better than some stuff on today. I also agree with the OP that we have grown up, but why shouldn't the kids of this generation enjoy what we did, if a lot of people of our generation and older enjoy TV and music from 50+ years ago, like Gilligans Island, I Dream of Jeannie, I Love Lucy, and bands that actually have TALENT and played good music? Sure a lot of kids my age enjoy rap and pop but that doesn't mean they hate oldies music.

According to "kid-friendly" standards, Ren & Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life were much, much worse than SpongeBob in words, sound effects, and visual jokes. Get over it, not all children are prone to act out stupid things they see on TV, so they should be allowed to watch it just like disgruntled men and women are allowed to complain about how badly they hate shows that don't even cater to their age group. Some of you make it seem like all cartoons of the 90s were "kid-friendly" and "smart", which is not the case at all. I grew up in the 90s, myself, and I remember quite a few "mindless" cartoons. And in this age of political correctness and overprotective parenting, I'm sure the cartoons of my childhood were worse than those of today. I don't watch cartoons anymore, but why is it a big deal when this generation has mindless animation when we (early-90s and older children) have seen worse?

it's called timelessness.

reply

I agree. We've grown up. And we cling to those memories more than anything. But EVERYONE must agree. That Nick today and yesteryear are like night and day. Shows then focused on real world topics, family stuff. Not the mindless stuff on Nick now. I stopped watching in 2002. Kids today are to busy with the Internet, psp, video games, etc. To get anything out of TV shows that are on. So the networks put out stuff that will grab as much attention as possible. Since we did not have most of that stuff, more time could be put toward great quality TV. I'm glad I was a kid of the 90's!!

to the OP

Trust me, i'm not even going to be biased for my favorite tv shows from when i was a kid, i mean that's just stupid, it's only television. The fact is that MOST of the shows on Nickelodeon today aren't even cartoons, i think the only cartoons they show are Spongebob and Fairly Oddparents; which aren't half bad but by no means compare to "timeless" shows like Doug, Rugrats(b4 Dill), Rocko, Hey Arnold, etc.
In terms of cartoons, those "classic" Nick toons appealed to a general audience b/c you could relate to them. Kids aged 8-13 could most likely relate to Doug, if not more, and it was VERY wholesome and just enjoyable. Rugrats, anybody could relate to and was just very easy to watch. Nowadays you see Spongebob, which i will admit is pretty entertaining, but you can't "relate" to it or Fairly Oddparents or w/e the crap they have on there anymore. I mean, the classic shows had somewhat of a purpose. This even brings me to mention an old favorite Nick at nite show, The Wonder Years, b/c it was wholesome and had meaning and was funny. Can you say that about Zoey 101, iCarly, or w/e other kind of crap they have on now? No. I mean how many kid, ehh PEOPLE out there can afford an expensive apt. loft with expensive cameras, their own studio, and run their own website? How many ppl go to a boarding school that is filled with drama based on the latest fashion trends and gossip? Actually... that would probably be a little more realistic, but the fact is that that show just sucks. And it's CLEARLY NOT for kids, and should not be on Nick in the first place. I mean if they had wanted to run a show like that they might as well have sent it to MTV to go along with all the other Laguna Beach, Newport Harbor, and OC shows b/c they're all the same... and lame.

i think the whole 'one can't relate to the show' thing is beside the point. shows on now suck and 90s shows are normal. its that simple. take any show, the simpsons for instance, that has been on from then to now and you see it goes downhill. tv has gone downhill. not just cartoons. and what is the culprit? simple, the very thing you're using now. the net. reality tv is stupid and pointless for a reason, its there to generate money not to be good quality viewing. tv channels need to make more as people desert them to use the net and i pods. there is however a light at the end of the tunnel, for we are currently in a transition period between tv and the net. once tv and the net have fully merged and watching tv on the net is not only common practice but the accepted method of entertainment then we can get better shows for there will be way more choice. already with youtube you see what i mean. thousands of videos on all manner of subjects compared to the 90s when you have a handful of channels and cable stations that play reruns of classic shows. so we now have more choice. however that doesnt alter the fact that 90s shows are simply better than current shows, and i don't think you need to analyse the various reasons. isn't the fact something sucks more important than WHY it is so lametarded? a previous poster talked of how his younger sibling enjoyed and even preferred older nick shows. i believe this is not an isolated incident and that if children everywhere were shown classic nick shows they would enjoy them. but frankly there isnt enough. one can't spend all ones life watching rockos modern life and rugrats reruns on video recordings- and so what i would like is if shows in the future had the same good points as those normal shows of the 90s but were available by modern means such as the net. which is excactly whats happening.

Yes, I considered it but then "The Simpsons" put it into perspective for me. The show was awesome growing up. I loved the characters and the stories but the same show today, with the same characters has lost its flare. It's a whole new generation of writers with different ideas.

reply

hmmm... its nice to see things from a different perspective... yet also good to see a general agreement on several points... well i will elaborate on my opinion and hopefully more elaborations will ensue from others. taking 'hey arnold!' as an example and 'zoey 101' as an example, i will first give a history of my exposure to each specemin as such. hey arnold! was one of the few cartoons i was allowed to watch when i was a kid. I first saw it around 97 or 98 and continued to watch the same one or two seasons that were shown on ABC until it stopped showing it around 02 or 03. ABC never showed any later seasons and i was suprised to find out that it continued to 04. I later saw the movie on tv several times. I enjoyed both the movie and the seasons i saw immensely, perhaps due both to the limited choices of cartoons i had seen and the fact is simply a good cartoon. Now i never had cable and live in australia so you must take this into account... but i have seen some cable shows shown on free tv here, generally a year after their original screening abroad in the states or wherever. Now to Zoey 101, i have recently watched a few episodes of it on ABC Rollercoaster and... taking into account my personal bias towards animated shows and away from live action shows, i hate it. Now i see nothing WRONG with it per se, but it just seems... watered down... dull... bland... and uninteresting. And in a world where video games, i pods, mobiles, the net etc are rapidly taking over tv's spotlight position in the media... it seems silly to make a stupider show when what you really need is a more competitive product... but enough of sense and reason, for this is about opinion. From the shows (both animated and live action) that i have seen (and i've seen a lot) i prefer 90s ones or earlier ones to current ones... as a rule of thumb. Whilst i admit i enjoy Ben10 and Avatar, these are not to me as entertaining as Doug or Pepper Ann or whathaveyou... and the few shows on par with 90s-early 200s cartoons i like are few and far between. Perhaps i just prefer the style of cel animation compared to cgi... perhaps i prefer the characters or their style... perhaps the shows were simply made better... who knows. but i'd prefer watching hey arnold! the weekenders or the wild thornberries to Zoey101, hannah montana or the latest buzz anyday
