TREMORS, released on this day

Anniversary Dept. - On this day--19 January--in 1990, TREMORS made its screen debut. Directed by Ron Underwood, this magnificent, gooey, fun little monster movie featured Fred Ward, Kevin Bacon, Michael Gross and a note-perfect extended cast battling underground people-eating Dune worms in the isolated town of Perfection, Nevada. Though never topped, it has, to date, spawned 6 sequels, one tv series and the pilot for another, spanning 3 decades.

The author of the below article (a "Bloody Disgusting" piece from a few years ago) calls TREMORS the JAWS of the 1990s. A bit of an exaggeration, perhaps, but something it definitely shares with Spielberg's giant shark tale is that both are movies it's almost impossible not to love.

This is more fun than the big budget Godzilla movies 1998-.

Those American-made Godzilla movies have been terrible though, so that, admittedly, is setting the bar pretty low.

Up there with Jaws as one of the all time great monster flicks. The setting, the cast, the monster design, the music and the script & directing all come together perfectly.
