If this was remade today, there's no way the NRA gun...

He'd absolutely be bumped off.

That's actually one of the things I love about this movie, the fact that character arcs defy the stereotypes of the horror genre. The nutball survivalist who should be killed off has a heroic moment, the slappable kid and the flaky hippie survive, the hero doesn't end up with an underwear model, etc.

Yeah, exactly! I fully expected to see his gun jam or something and he'd be swallowed up but no, he manages to kill one of them! Very much against expectations.

That was one of the things that made the movie so much fun, the way it kept defying the expectations of the monster movie genre! It made the movie seem very fresh and original, and enjoyable.

The one exception was the death of the shopkeeper, who had shown himself to be greedy and irritating and who suffered the usual fate of greedy, annoying, monster movie supporting characters. I never liked that scene, it was very much a genre cliche.

I too also am glad they did not make his character some far-right redneck, but rather a smart and logical character who becomes very useful. The scene where he and Reba turn a worm into swiss cheese is the best scene in the movie, and one of the best scenes in a movie like this.

I'm glad to have grown up with films like these. When they were made to entertain and give people a fun experience. Rather than to divide, spread hate and indoctrinate.
